Nashville Public Library hosts the Urban Libraries Council’s 2009 Partners for Success Conference. Part of the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) biennial conference series, the event reflects the ULC’s larger initiative to examine the emerging ways libraries contribute to the improvement of urban life. The conference is noted for its ability to convene a variety of urban activists, librarians, trustees, mayors and other city and county officials, and the rich discussion and research it generates. Past host cities have included Boston, Chicago and Cleveland.

For the first time, the general public as well as leaders and thinkers from across North America will be invited to the conference to discuss key issues on the civic agenda in communities across the nation. Sessions will focus on innovative regional efforts related to governance, housing, employment, health, environmental resources, transportation and education, the continuing and rapid evolution of information exchange and learning, and the various ways public libraries contribute to building and sustaining strong regional areas.

Experts from a variety of political, practitioner and philanthropic perspectives will take part in the conference, including Joe Cortwright of Impresa Consulting. Cortwright will help conferees understand their “City Vitals,” statistical measures of city performance in four key areas including talent, innovation, connections and distinctiveness, and how to use this measure to maximize successes and minimize weaknesses.

For more than 30 years the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) has worked to strengthen public libraries as an essential part of urban life. A membership organization of North America's premier public library systems and the corporations that serve them, ULC serves as a forum for sharing best practices resulting from targeted research, education and forecasting. TSU's Space for New Media Inaugural Exhibition honors the intention and work of the Cause Collective. Along the Way is a 30' wide, 10' tall, Sundance "New Frontiers" video from the Cause Collective, a team of artists, designers and ethnographers who create innovative art in the public realm. In order to take away some of the mystery from the audition process, this workshop brings together the Artistic Directors from four of Nashville’s professional theatres—People’s Branch Theatre, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre, and Nashville Shakespeare Festival to provide participants with a glimpse into the process. Participants will present a three-minute audition consisting of two contrasting monologues and receive immediate feedback from these directors—thoughts on the monologue choice; ideas for the actor on how to be considered for callbacks and casting; in general, what the directors look for in open call auditions. In addition to hearing other participants’ audition feedback, there will be a half-hour break midway through the master class to provide an opportunity for more informal discussion and networking.

The exhibition is broadly divided into three topical groups: "European Gardens" represents garden images created by Americans abroad, especially in Giverny, France, which captivated so many artists. Mary MacMonnies, for example, rented an old monastery in Giverny, developed the gardens, and produced several paintings of them. Works by Childe Hassam and Ernest Lawson, on the other hand, depict more urban gardens in and around Paris, providing a contrast to the images of Giverny. "Gardens in America" explores the many known gardens painted by American Impressionists, including the art colonies of Old Lyme, Connecticut and Cornish, New Hampshire, and various gardens, from Charleston, South Carolina, to California. "Garden Sculpture," a third section, was an essential element of garden design, and a few select examples of garden statuary will document this important three-dimensional feature within the garden environment. At the end of the nineteenth century, American artists demonstrated a preference for gardens as artistic motifs as well as a growing appreciation of the art of gardening itself. The range of color and the variation in form and silhouette made the garden a compelling subject for a large number of painters inclined toward the Impressionist style. Early twentieth century America witnesses a mania for the garden, and the interest in the art of gardening dominated many aspects of domestic life. Garden clubs, magazines, floral displays and a multitude of other activities associated with flowers and the garden permeated American life. Publications and articles appeared offering gardening advice for Americans while also asserting that the art of gardening paralleled the art of painting.

Meisner trained a long list of great actors including Steve McQueen, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton as well as David Mamet and Sidney Pollack. The Meisner Technique gets you out of your head and into the moment. At Actors Bridge, we take students through a step-by-step approach to the Meisner Technique giving them a strong foundation in being an emotionally available, truthfully responsive actor. Whether you are an actor interested in deepening your craft or someone looking for greater confidence, spontaneity and intuition in your everyday life, the Meisner Technique can help you on your journey.

Meisner developed a series of exercises to be taken in sequence. It is important that all actors begin at Level One regardless of experience. Classes are held once a week. The 21st Annual Nashville Lawn and Garden Show will celebrate the beauty created when natural artistry and manmade artistry are combined in gardens. Staged to the theme, Artistic by Nature, the 2010 show promises to offer inspiration, ideas and information for gardeners and garden lovers. The Nashville Lawn and Garden Show is Tennessee’s premier horticultural event and one of the largest gardening shows in the South. The 2010 Nashville Lawn and Garden Show has been named a Top 20 Event for winter 2010 by the South East Tourism Society of the USA. Produced by the Horticultural Association of Tennessee, the annual event is staged at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.

Centerpiece of the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show is always a naturalized presentation of more than 20 outstanding live gardens created by professional landscape designers. In addition to thousands of flowers and plants, most of the gardens include water features, ranging from small fountains to large waterfalls, and elaborate structures such as rock walls, terraces, pergolas and gazebos. A series of 20 free lectures is presented throughout the four-day show by expert horticulturists and garden designers. The show also includes 250 exhibit booths of horticultural products, services, and equipment for show and sale; in 2009, vendors from 12 states participated in the event. The show’s spectacular floral design gallery features the work of more than 25 of the best designers in the mid-south region. The show annually attracts more than 22,000 paid attendees, plus several thousand additional people who are exhibitors, speakers and volunteers.

You will learn how to use the resources around you to sustain life in situations where emergency rescue is hours or days away. This course also includes a CPR component. This is the second part in a twelve part series presented by the OutCentral Cultural Center and the Nashville Film Festival. Looking for Langston is a 1989 British black and white film directed by Isaac Julien. It combines authentic archival newsreel footage of Harlem in the 1920s with scripted scenes to produce a non-linear impressionistic story line celebrating black gay identity and desire during the artistic and cultural period known as the Harlem Renaissance in New York. The film is a short, running about 42 minutes. Brother to Brother is a film written and directed by Rodney Evans and released in 2004. The film debuted at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival before playing the gay and lesbian film festival circuit, with a limited theatrical release in late 2004. Art student Perry (Anthony Mackie) befriends an elderly homeless man named Bruce Nugent (Roger Robinson), who turns out to have been an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Through recalling his friendships with other important Harlem Renaissance figures Langston Hughes (Daniel Sunjata), Aaron Douglas, Wallace Thurman and Zora Neale Hurston, Bruce chronicles some of the challenges he faced as a young, black, gay writer in the 1920s. Perry discovers that the challenges of homophobia and racism he faces in the early 21st century closely parallel Bruce's.

Senior Editor of Art in America Richard Vine will give a lecture titled John Kingerlee: By Art Alone on December 8 at 7:00pm as part of the 2009-2010 Parthenon Symposia Series. Mr. Vine states that "Kingerlee began making paintings, drawings, and collages in a typical Outsider style; yet, over time, he evolved -- [eventually] creating works that converse with those of Malevich, Giacometti, Braque, Klee, Schwitters, Rothko and Twombly." The lecture is free to the public, but requires reservations, which can be made by calling (615) 862-8431.

Kingerlee is a self-taught English artist who has been painting most of the seven decades of his life. This American tour of his paintings began two years ago, curated by the late New York critic William Zimmer. The Parthenon's East Gallery will exhibit thirty-nine paintings and collages.

Many of renowned artist John Kingerlee's paintings are built of layers and layers of paint applied with a palette knife or trowel. This repetitive process continues for months, sometimes years, leaving a history of the process in the painting. As the artist looks out his studio window, he sees the rugged and barren Beara landscape of Ireland as it reaches to the sea; low brush and outcroppings of rock lead to the Atlantic Ocean. The layers of paint he applies take on the contours of the landscape and his feelings about the space he occupies -- abstract, but rich with implied and applied color. Kingerlee also spends three months each year painting in Fez, Morocco, where he immerses himself in the urban environment, inspired by its graffiti and advertising, which pushes him in a different direction from the landscapes of his Irish home.

The Meisner Technique gets you out of your head and into the moment. At Actors Bridge, we take students through a step-by-step approach to the Meisner Technique giving them a strong foundation in being an emotionally available, truthfully responsive actor. Level Two let's actors work in improvisation and scenework learning to be emotionally full and truthfully responsive in performance. Whether you are an actor interested in deepening your craft or someone looking for greater confidence, spontaneity and intuition in your everyday life, the Meisner Technique can help you on your journey.

Meisner developed a series of exercises to be taken in sequence. It is important that all actors begin at Level One regardless of experience. Classes are held once a week. In addition, students are required to work with partners outside of class 2-3 times per week. To really absorb the technique, students must put in the time.
