Glengarry Glenn Ross is a scalding comedy-drama that took Broadway and London by storm when it opened in 1984, and garnered a Tony nomination for best play. In the first act, the salesmen vie for position as they gulp their cocktails in the local Chinese restaurant. The second act shifts to the office where the promising Glengarry Glen Ross leads have been filched. Mamet’s not-so-subtle reflection on how bad things happen when vulnerable people are reduced to targets by unscrupulous sharks unfortunately still resonates today. Cast: David Alford, Brian Russell, David Compton, Eric Pasto-Crosby, Henry Haggard, Chris Strand, and Kamal Bolden.

A brilliant new play, Rabbit Hole won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day. Producing Artistic Director, Rene Copeland, says “I don’t think there’s better, more believable, more truthful dialogue and characters than what this play brings to the stage, and you will be amazed by what you see.”

In Darwin in Malibu, Charles Darwin—120 years after his death—is hanging out in a beach house overlooking the Pacific. His peace is rudely disturbed when his old friend Thomas Huxley arrives, closely followed by the Bishop of Oxford. And Darwin suddenly finds himself entangled in an enthralling and thought-provoking comedy about God, science, and plastic surgery. You may think you know how such a discussion would go between the father of evolution and one of evolution’s most outspoken critics in his day, but you might be surprised.

In Darwin in Malibu, 120 years after his death, Charles Darwin is hanging out in a beach house overlooking the Pacific with a girl young enough to be his daughter. His peace is rudely disturbed when his old friend Thomas Huxley washes up on the beach closely followed by the Bishop of Oxford. Darwin suddenly finds himself entangled in an enthralling and thought-provoking comedy about God, science, and plastic surgery. You may think you know how such a discussion would go between the father of evolution and one of evolution’s most outspoken critics in his day, but you will be surprised.

Dr. Mitch Johnson will lead the eight-week course, The Man Who Wouldn't Conform: Ralph Waldo Emerson, on selected Wednesdays from Nov. 5-Jan. 21 at the Nashville Center for Spiritual Living. Attendees will examine the late author's works to develop their vision for a successful life and career; create a more positive outlook for themselves and others; better understand the power of prayer; gain insights into life and themselves for clearer thinking; and understand the great beauty and simplicity of how the universe works.

Emerson was an American essayist, philosopher, poet, and leader of the Transcendentalist movement in the early 19th century. His teachings directly influenced the growing New Thought movement of the mid-1800s. Separate classes will be offered at 11:00am and 7:00pm on selected Wednesdays with holiday breaks.

Ever wondered why racism is still an issue in America and we can’t get past it? Civil right laws have been passed, integration has come, and equal opportunity seems abundant, but why does racism continue to plague the fabric of America?

These workshops are designed for anyone who is ready to go a step beyond traditional diversity training and really discover how racism shapes our thinking, communities, institutions, and conscious/unconscious behaviors. By understanding what’s at the core of racism, participants can began to unlearn it and dismantle this very real problem in America.

"White Privilege is an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on (as a white person) cashing in each day, but about which, I was “meant” to remain oblivious. I am pretty sure that I can live in a neighborhood where my neighbors will be neutral or pleasant to me. I can turn on the TV and see people of my color (white) depicted in a positive way. I am never asked to speak for all people of my racial group and I can protect my children most of the time from people who may not like them.” - Peggy McIntosh

The second workshop will look at White Privilege -- it's legacy, pathology and continuing impact in America and will feature Tim Wise as a presenter.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts will host a major symposium January 23–24, 2009, in conjunction with the exhibition Paint Made Flesh, a revisionist study of post-World War II art.

The exhibition offers a rejoinder to the modernist orthodoxies of the period by contending that paint’s material properties make it most suited to convey metaphors for human vulnerability. The exhibition includes works by Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Willem de Kooning, Alice Neel, Leon Golub, Philip Guston, Eric Fischl, Georg Baselitz, Jenny Saville, Wangechi Mutu, John Currin, Daniel Richter, and others.

The symposium will offer compelling conversation about the role of figure painting as it has defined psychological and socio-historical conditions in Europe and the United States since World War II. Click here for the complete schedule.

Join Stephen N. Fliegel, curator of medieval art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, for a presentation of 1,000 years of aesthetic culture, from the austere spirituality of the Byzantines to the exalted frivolity of French Gothic secular art. Fliegel will examine sublime sculptures, painted altarpieces, and illuminated manuscripts created in the service of faith and devotion. The lecture will include an overview of the Cleveland Museum?s medieval collection, which is internationally recognized as one of the world's finest.
