The Dickens of a Christmas event on Franklin's Historic Main Street brings the joy and charm of an old-fashioned Victorian Christmas recreated from the pages of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and other Dickens' tales. More than 200 volunteers participate in the event as characters from Dickens' stories or street performers. Activities include:

Dancers and street musicians perform are on the streets throughout the event. Violinists, hand bell choirs, harpists, carolers, pianists, even a water harmonica player all add to the entertaining street scene.

Victorian treats abound, from authentic fish 'n' chips to turkey legs, plum puddings, roasted chestnuts and sugar plums.

A holiday bazaar arts & crafts area encircles Franklin's charming Public Square, where horse drawn carriages allow visitors to see Historic Downtown Franklin at a slower pace.

Everyone is invited to join the Town Sing starting at the Public Square at 5:00pm.

Dickens of a Christmas is free and open to the public, supported by Publix Supermarkets, Franklin Road Academy, and the City of Franklin and presented by the Heritage Foundation of Franklin & Williamson County and Downtown Franklin Association, which seeks to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County and to promote the ongoing economic revitalization of downtown Franklin in the context of historic preservation.

Amahl and the Night Visitors / Opera Holiday Concert by Gian Carlo Menotti. A family evening showcasing The Mary Ragland Young Artists.

Thrill to Gian Carlo Menotti’s touching one-act when we present it with an Operatic Holiday Concert for the whole family. Little Amahl, a poor shepherd boy, has his life forever changed after a chance encounter with Three Kings who are following a star to the manger in Bethlehem. This emotional telling of the journey of the Magi is guaranteed to bring smiles...as well as a few tears. Then enjoy an over-the-top presentation of seasonal carols and favorites sung in festive opera scale with the Nashville Opera Ensemble. Bring the family, because you may even get to sing along on a few numbers!

The Widow of the South, written by long-time Franklin resident and Historic Carnton Plantation Association board member Robert Hicks, centers on the life of Carrie McGavock, the mistress of Carnton before, during and after the Civil War. After the hardcover release in September, 2005, the book rose to #5 and spent eight weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list in the fall of 2005. Now in paperback and published in French, Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin, the book gives readers an understanding of the historical significance of the Battle of Franklin, described by National Geographic as "the most unjustly forgotten battle of the entire Civil War." (April, 2005)

In 1999 a holiday tradition began in Clarksville. That tradition is Christmas on the Cumberland at the McGregor Park RiverWalk. The RiverWalk will be transformed once again into a winter wonderland for the 9th Annual Christmas on the Cumberland event. The theme for this year's event is The Spirit of Christmas. Christmas on the Cumberland is truly an experience to be treasured by the young and young-at-heart. Children of all ages are often captivated by scenes like Toyland with Santa's workshop, the snow skiing elves, and two tunnels of dancing lights. Christmas on the Cumberland stretches a total of seven-tenths of a mile. Come to The McGregor Park RiverWalk and enjoy The Spirit of Christmas!

One of Nashville's favorite traditions returns as the Nissan Concert Series presents Christmas at the Ryman with Amy Grant and Vince Gill. A night of holiday music you won't want to miss!

In their two hour program of cherished standards and newer seasonal fare, the Grammy-winning husband-and-wife team will be backed by a 12-piece band that features a horn section and two harmony singers, one of whom is Gill’s daughter, Jenny. “Some of our earlier Christmas tours were with a symphony orchestra,” Gill notes. “This time, though, we wanted to create more of an intimate, living room feel.” Plans are underway to work with local charities in order to give back to these communities.

In September, Grant releases her first new Christmas album in nine years, The Christmas Collection, made up of selections from her three earlier Christmas CDs—plus four new tunes, including “Baby It’s Christmas,” a song Grant and Gill wrote together.

The Interfaith Dental Clinic is proud to announce the date of our 2009 Spring Gala, Soiree for Smiles!

The event will be held on March 28, 2009 at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. This year's event, chaired by Mrs. Kathy Reynolds, promises to be an evening full of elegance and excitement. The event will include cocktails, a gourmet dinner, live auction, mystery boxes and dancing. All proceeds from the gala will benefit the Interfaith Dental Clinic, a non-profit organization founded to restore, protect and improve the oral health of uninsured low-income, employed persons, their children and the elderly in the greater Nashville area through access to affordable quality dental care, oral disease prevention services and oral health education. The Interfaith dental clinic provided over $2,000,000 in patient services in 2007-2008 and recorded over 7,043 patient visits. The clinic relies on the generous donations of individuals, churches and foundations to subsidize the cost of delivering this care.

Have a holly, jolly, 19th-century Christmas with Nashville Zoo!

To celebrate the season, the Zoo's Historic Home will be decorated with greenery, ribbon, and vintage decorations that belonged to Margaret and Elise Croft, former tenants of the Grassmere property whose family owned the land and home for five generations.

Yuletide tours will be offered at the Home the first three weekends in December (6-7, 13-14, 20-21). The tour showcases a traditional Victorian Christmas and explores some of the time's customs that we still honor today. Tours will start daily at 10:00am and run on the half hour, with the last tour starting at 3:00pm.

Tours of the Home are included with Zoo admission. To take the tour, guests are asked to assemble on the front porch of the Historic Home where the tour guide will meet them.

A Holiday Celebration featuring Harry Connick, Jr. and His Big Band at the Ryman! Harry Connick, Jr.’s career has been studded with awards and recognition, including several multi-platinum and gold albums, Grammy, Tony and Emmy awards, Cable Ace, Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, and much more. A true American icon, there are few artists of Harry’s stature. Harry grew up in New Orleans, and it is here you will find the roots of his love for music and performing. His early talent was shaped by study with such luminaries as James Booker and Ellis Marsalis, and he was but five years old when he began performing. This will surely be an eveing to remember!

The film -- frantic, funny and free -- was the runaway comedy hit of 1978, and established the pair as their generation's answer to Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and Martin & Lewis. The picture's enormous box office success, in fact, made them the screen's most successful comedy team of all time.

Trace Adkins and Lynyrd Skynyrd will ring in 2009 by both playing two New Year's Eve shows -- in two different cities. The country hitmaker and the Southern rock legends will appear in both Pikeville, Kentucky, and Nashville to usher in the New Year. To accommodate their respective travel schedules, each artist will open one show and headline the other.

Trace Adkins is a multi-faceted entertainer who has clearly earned his place among country’s most identifiable and important artists of his generation. Twelve years into his recording career as a country chartbuster, with dozens of hits under his belt and nine top-selling albums, Adkins has racked up a long string of hits including his recent chart-toppers "You're Gonna Miss This" and "Ladies Love Country Boys.”

Ranked as one of the best-selling artists of all time by the Recording Industry Association of America and named one of the greatest artists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members, Lynyrd Skynyrd is still going strong with over 26 million CD's sold to date, and over 80 live performances annually. The band is currently writing the follow-up to their 2003 release Vicious Cycle that spawned the hit single, “Red White and Blue.”

Based on the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil's former army commander. The dazzling score features well known standards including "Blue Skies," "I Love A Piano," "How Deep Is the Ocean" and the perennial favorite, "White Christmas."

The Del McCoury Band is a Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band. Originally Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals with Del on guitar and his brother Jerry on bass, the band went through a number of changes until the 1980s when the band solidified its line-up, adding McCoury's sons, Ronnie and Robbie on mandolin and banjo, respectively. In 1988, the "Dixie Pals" name was dropped in favor of the current name. Fiddler Tad Marks and bass player Mike Brantley joined in the early 1990s while the band became a national touring act. In 2004 they were nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album for It's Just the Night, and in 2006 they won that category for The Company We Keep.

Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson weaves friendship, rejection and loyalty into a disturbing, darkly atmospheric yet unexpectedly tender tableau of adolescence based on the best-selling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

A fragile, anxious boy, 12-year-old Oskar is regularly bullied by his stronger classmates but never strikes back. The lonely boy's wish for a friend seems to come true when he meets Eli, also 12, who moves in next door to him with her father. A pale, serious young girl, she only comes out at night and doesn't seem affected by the freezing temperatures. Coinciding with Eli's arrival is a series of inexplicable disappearances and murders, and for an introverted boy like Oskar, who is fascinated by gruesome stories, it doesn't take long before he figures out that Eli is a vampire.

New Year's Eve with the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, Craig Morgan, and special guests The Devonshires, John Karl and Walter Egan. Experience a night to remember this New Year's Eve. Enjoy dinner, dancing and rock in 2009 with Craig Morgan.

When Craig Morgan was ten years old and on a school field trip to Nashville, he sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" well enough to catch the ear of a distinctive older lady in the crowd. "She walked up to me and said, ‘Son, someday you’re gonna be a famous singer,’" Morgan remembers. Two-plus decades later, he’d be looking at a picture of the woman—Minnie Pearl—in the Ryman Auditorium dressing room that bears her name, getting ready for his first performance on the Grand Ole Opry. What Minnie didn’t know was that before his moment in the spotlight finally came, Morgan would be an EMT, a contractor, a sheriff’s deputy and a Wal-Mart assistant dairy manager. He’d also spend ten years serving his country in the U.S. Army.

A night of uplifting, lyrical performances from the top young poets, emcees, and spoken word artists in the region. This is the premiere event for Youth Speaks Nashville, a non-profit dedicated to building a culture of literacy and a multi-generational community of poets in Middle Tennessee. The evening will include performances from leading poets at TSU, Vanderbilt, Belmont, American Baptist College, Trevecca, MTSU, Meharry, Maplewood, Hillsboro, Stratford, Hunters Lane, Cane Ridge, Nashville School of the Arts, and the YMCA. Proceeds will help fund the placement of poet mentors in the area's public schools and youth organizations.

"The kids loved each other. There was so much cheering, hugging, fist pumping, and hollering it might have been a sporting event, except the fans were rooting for every player on the team. The Grand Slam Final was a breathtaking reminder of the power of creativity, hope, and free speech." - Letter to the Tennessean in response to Youth Speaks Nashville's 1st Annual Poetry Slam
