Sing Me Back Home is the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum’s permanent exhibit, an exciting, multi-layered journey through the life of country music.

Through artifacts, photographs, original recordings, archival video, newly produced films, touchscreen interactive media and beautifully rendered text panels, Sing Me Back Home immerses visitors in the history and sounds of country music, its meanings and the lives and voices of many of its honored personalities.

A self-guided tour covering two floors of the Museum, Sing Me Back Home tells the story of country music from its pre-commercial roots in the nineteenth century through its vibrant life in the twenty-first century. Organized chronologically, the story moves through large subjects such as “Country During the War Years,” while each glass artifact case has a unique theme. Visitors can read about the music and its makers or let the powerful photos, instruments, costumes - and especially the music - tell the story by themselves.

Throughout your journey you are able to see the two-floor, glassed-in central archives where the Museum’s vast collection is housed and where Museum staff are seen working with historical artifacts and recordings. This unprecedented view into the core archives is like a window into a shared history and the processes from which the Museum exhibits emerge.

At the close of the journey, visitors enter the Hall of Fame Rotunda, the hallowed space where the Country Music Hall of Fame® members are honored alongside American master Thomas Hart Benton’s famous last painting, The Sources of Country Music.

Sing Me Back Home is just what the title suggests: an exploration of the power of music to make living history and to connect us to our deepest feelings.

This production is a family comedy that tells the story of Daisy Werthan, an independent, aging Jewish widow – sharp-tongued and set in her ways, who having recently demolished yet another car, is informed by her son, Boolie that henceforth she must rely on the services of a chauffeur. The person he hires for the job is a thoughtful, proud, soft-spoken black man, Hoke Coleburn. At first, Daisy’s stubbornness and cultural prejudices cause much friction, but over the course of 25 years, Hoke becomes not only her chauffeur, but against all odds, her best friend.

The Dickens of a Christmas event on Franklin's Historic Main Street brings the joy and charm of an old-fashioned Victorian Christmas recreated from the pages of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and other Dickens' tales. More than 200 volunteers participate in the event as characters from Dickens' stories or street performers. Activities include:

Dancers and street musicians perform are on the streets throughout the event. Violinists, hand bell choirs, harpists, carolers, pianists, even a water harmonica player all add to the entertaining street scene.
Victorian treats abound, from authentic fish 'n' chips to turkey legs, plum puddings, roasted chestnuts and sugar plums.
A holiday bazaar arts & crafts area encircles Franklin's charming Public Square, where horse drawn carriages allow visitors to see Historic Downtown Franklin at a slower pace.

Dickens of a Christmas is free and open to the public, supported by Publix Supermarkets, Franklin Road Academy, and the City of Franklin and presented by the Heritage Foundation of Franklin & Williamson County and Downtown Franklin Association, which seeks to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County and to promote the ongoing economic revitalization of downtown Franklin in the context of historic preservation.

From early portraiture to Pop art, American artists have always borrowed from the broad reservoir of imagery broadly defined as Americana. Reviewing art from two centuries, this exhibition presents images of America revealed through the eyes of artists.

Americana Redefined features some of the highlights of Cheekwood’s collection, including a nineteenth-century view of Belmont Mansion by an anonymous artist, a genre painting by Eastman Johnson, realist works by The Group of Eight (Arthur B. Davies, William Glackens, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan), American Scene painting, and many artists from the post-World War II generation. For the first time in several years, the famous pair of portraits that Andy Warhol and Jamie Wyeth painted of one other will be exhibited again at Cheekwood.

Get the kids together, and hip hop over to the Zoo for our 12th annual Eggstravaganzoo! Nashville Zoo will be distributing 30,000 plastic eggs for children ages 10 and under to find and redeem for prizes. All egg hunt participants will receive an egg-citing prize pack. Egg hunts will take place on the Zoo's Festival Field, located behind the gift shop. Everyone is encouraged to arrive at least an hour before the egg hunt times. Free games, like hopscotch and sack races, will be offered near Festival Field. Special guests for the day will include Zoo mascot Twiga and the Easter Bunny.

Be sure to start the big day off right with a full breakfast. We will be offering the popular "Bunny Breakfast" the morning of the event by reservation only and for an additional cost. The breakfast will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, hash browns, juice and coffee. A surprise visit from the Easter Bunny will surely delight the young ones. Historic Downtown Franklin, Tenn. celebrates St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, March 13 with Feile (pro: "FAY-LA") Franklin – a celtic festival on historic Main Street! Streets will be closed to traffic and filled with Irish music, dance, food and fun. It's a free street festival with a ticketed imported beer tasting in the Main Street area shops. The street will be filled with roasted potatoes, fried potatoes, turkey legs, fish and chips and all things Irish. At night, specialty and imported beers will be sampled at the shops. More than two dozen Irish bands and dance groups will be featured on two stages throughout the event.

All proceeds will go to Downtown Franklin Association for promotion and continued revitalization of the historic district, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and designated by the National Trust as a Great American Main Street.

Helpful Information: Main Street will be closed for the two blocks between the Public Square and Five Points that day. Ticket holders will check in at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Main Street to get their special tasting glasses, a map to the tasting sites, and a description of the beers and Irish whiskey to sample.

Mule Day is an annual celebration of all things related to mules and is held in Columbia, Tennessee, the "Mule Capital" of the world. Begun in 1840 as "Breeder's Day", a meeting for mule breeders, it now attracts over 200,000 people and takes place over four days. Noises Off is a play within a play, in this case a dreadful comedy titled Nothing On - the type of play in which young girls run about in their underwear, old men drop their trousers and many doors continually open and shut. Nothing On is set in "a delightful 16th century possett mill" that has been converted to a modern dwelling for which renters are solicited; the fictional playwright is appropriately name Robin Housemonger. Rumpelstiltskin, the last of his kind, dances alone in the darkness before a leaping fire, casting a giant shadow on a craggy mountain face as he relates in ominous verse his plan to "find a child of my own to chase away the dark". Huddled around a fire in a primitive nomadic village, Uta conspires with his mother to swindle the king out of his yearly tribute by inventing a false prophecy that his daughter, Alana, would at the first full moon of each year, spin straw into gold. As Rumpelstiltskin peeks out from a nomad's tent, Alana is abducted by the king and his reluctant son, Marius, and taken to the king's castle, where she is sent to work spinning straw into gold. In the castle the mood lightens as romance blossoms between Alana and Marius and comedy reigns among the royal servants; Old Nanny, Cook, Birdy and her niece, Pigeon. Still, the rhyming Rumpelstiltskin is manipulating every step of the way, and there is always the underlying unease that he will appear and exact his dreadful payment.

The exhibition is broadly divided into three topical groups: "European Gardens" represents garden images created by Americans abroad, especially in Giverny, France, which captivated so many artists. Mary MacMonnies, for example, rented an old monastery in Giverny, developed the gardens, and produced several paintings of them. Works by Childe Hassam and Ernest Lawson, on the other hand, depict more urban gardens in and around Paris, providing a contrast to the images of Giverny. "Gardens in America" explores the many known gardens painted by American Impressionists, including the art colonies of Old Lyme, Connecticut and Cornish, New Hampshire, and various gardens, from Charleston, South Carolina, to California. "Garden Sculpture," a third section, was an essential element of garden design, and a few select examples of garden statuary will document this important three-dimensional feature within the garden environment. At the end of the nineteenth century, American artists demonstrated a preference for gardens as artistic motifs as well as a growing appreciation of the art of gardening itself. The range of color and the variation in form and silhouette made the garden a compelling subject for a large number of painters inclined toward the Impressionist style. Early twentieth century America witnesses a mania for the garden, and the interest in the art of gardening dominated many aspects of domestic life. Garden clubs, magazines, floral displays and a multitude of other activities associated with flowers and the garden permeated American life. Publications and articles appeared offering gardening advice for Americans while also asserting that the art of gardening paralleled the art of painting.

The exhibit, which is located within the Museum’s permanent exhibition and titled after one of Parker’s famous slogans, The Colonel Says, “How Much Does It Cost If It’s Free,” is now open and will run through March 2010.

Incorporating photographs, business documents, letters, apparel and promotional materials from the Museum’s collection and from Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., “Graceland,” the exhibit will trace Parker’s life and career, from his days as an immigrant carnival worker to his time as a powerful, pioneering artist manager.

Colonel Parker managed Elvis Presley from 1955 until the singer’s death in 1977. Prior to managing Presley, Parker helped transform Eddy Arnold into a country superstar with his own radio shows, movie roles, Las Vegas bookings, and an unparalleled resumé of #1 records. In steering the careers of both men, Parker revolutionized the artist management role, displaying an unprecedented marketing savvy while exercising near-total control. His energetic, all-encompassing management style created a blueprint that is still followed today.

Parker, a purposeful, perceptive, and mysterious character, was born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk in Breda, Holland, and entered the United States illegally in 1929. After serving in the Army for three years in Hawaii, he moved to Florida, where he joined the Johnny J. Jones and Royal American carnivals, passing himself off as a native West Virginian under the name of his former commanding officer, Thomas Parker.

After several years of carnival life, Parker settled down and became director of the Tampa Humane Society (he was, among other things, Tampa’s chief dog officer) where he developed a remunerative range of pet service-pitches that translated seamlessly into showbiz promotion.

He started off with Gene Austin, Roy Acuff, and Ernest Tubb, focusing at first on Florida tours exclusively but gradually expanding his show-business activities until in 1944 he met Eddy Arnold on a Jamup & Honey tent show. He managed Arnold as his exclusive client from 1945 until 1953, developing a range of unique promotions that helped make the singer one of the most prolific hit-making artists of all time.

By early 1955, Parker had set his sights on the emerging Elvis Presley, whom he placed as an opening act on tours by his new client, Hank Snow. By August, Parker had acquired a controlling interest in Presley’s management contract, and two months later set up a deal for RCA to purchase Presley’s contract from Sun Records for the unheard-of sum of $35,000.

Under Parker’s exclusive guidance, Presley went on to become one of the most influential cultural figures of the twentieth century--a tribute to a talent and a gift for communication that continues to defy definition. Parker secured for Presley broad national exposure through television at a time when other managers feared that the new medium would undercut the value of personal appearances. Calling the shots in Hollywood, Parker made Presley a #1 box-office star and kept the entertainer’s career alive during his two-year stint in the Army.

Among the artifacts on display in The Colonel Says, “How Much Does It Cost If It’s Free” are:

• Button, press kit and other promotional materials generated by Parker for his clients
• Eddy Arnold scrapbook assembled by Parker’s office, illustrating the large number of news articles and advertisements generated for his clients
• Plaster bust of Parker sculpted by Marvin Thompson in 1972. Parker commissioned the rendering and gave it to Eddy Arnold as a gift.
• Two of Parker’s prized belt buckles, including a gold elephant belt buckle given to him as a gift from Elvis Presley. Inscribed on the back: “To the Colonel ‘Who Never Forgets’—Elvis—July, 1973.”
• Two of Parker’s handpainted shop coats, which Parker often wore to promote various Presley projects and achievements
• Personal correspondence from Parker, including a1955 telegram to Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, in which Parker explains his new role as Presley’s manager

Spotlight exhibits are narratives that supplement themes or aspects of the Museum’s core exhibition, Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music. These short-term, informal displays either provide a closer look at a particular person or aspect of country music, or spotlight recently donated items or special anniversaries. Rotated often, spotlight exhibits also offer a glimpse into the Museum’s unique collection, which includes recorded discs, historical photographs, films and videotapes; thousands of posters, books, songbooks, periodicals and sheet music; personal artifacts such as performers’ instruments, costumes and accessories; and more.

After living in New York for twenty years, photographer Greg Miller returned to his hometown of Nashville to reexamine the city where he grew up. With the help of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, in 2008 Miller began a series of photographs using familiar spaces from his childhood as starting points. Attempting to reconstruct memories by photographing in and around areas of Nashville where he grew up, he often photographs complete strangers cast in scenes drawn from the lasting emotional remnants of his past.

Truck and bus drivers across Latin America delight in inscribing dichos"sayings or amusing expressions"on their vehicles. Hand painted in an endless variety of graphic styles and colors, dichos address subjects ranging from religion and love to puns and earthy humor. Unfortunately, with the emergence of corporate trucking and government push for standardized public transportation, this vibrant folk art may gradually disappear. The 46 color photographs are accompanied by miniature dichos-laden vehicles, including one painted by well-known Latin American artist Arturo Sosa Perez, and full-size metal bumpers with text and graphics. The exhibition is organized thematically according to the content of the dichos. The four categories are Love; Faith and Devotion; Wit, Commentary, and Egotism; and Buses of Panama.

Former Gaither Vocal Band singer Guy Penrod and the Annie Moses Band, a family ensemble who plays a blend of classical and contemporary, will be among the artists joining songstress Amy Grant for Lipscomb University's fifth annual Lighting of the Green concert on December 1. The Lipscomb student choruses will join Grant, emcee Lelan Statom, WTVF meteorologist, and additional musical guests such as Buddy Greene, a guitar pickin' singer/songwriter, to kick off the holiday season with a free outdoor concert in the Allen Arena Mall on the Lipscomb campus.

Additional festivities include a photo session with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus; thousands of Christmas lights including a 35-foot-tall Christmas tree; and The Branches of Love Hall of Christmas Trees displaying around 40 custom-decorated Christmas trees. Food from Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Blue Coast Burrito and Pizza Hut will be available for purchase. As a Lighting of the Green first, Lipscomb's children's theater program will present an original play, Wolf Calls and Pig Tales, a retelling of the Three Little Pigs nursery rhyme, at 4:00pm in Collins Alumni Auditorium. The cost is $5 per person. The event will also serve as a collection event for the Second Harvest Food Bank's Feeding Hope Challenge campaign to collect 300,000 pounds of food in just 30 days, beginning Dec. 1. Bringing lawn chairs and blankets is encouraged. Handicapped parking will be available in the Allen Arena parking garage.

Share the warmth of the holidays with friends and family at the 57th annual Nashville Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 4. Recording artist John Rich has agreed to serve as grand marshal for the parade. Rich and Mayor Karl Dean will light the Nashville Christmas Tree at the Public Square, near the intersection of Second Avenue and Union Street.

Hosted by Piedmont Natural Gas, the parade starts at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Broadway with a ribbon cutting and fireworks. The parade will travel east on Broadway and then up Second Avenue, passing the city's Christmas tree before heading over the Woodland Street Bridge to LP Field.

The event is intended to benefit Piedmont's Share the Warmth Round Up program, as well as to kick off the holiday season in downtown Nashville.

"The Nashville Christmas Parade is a great tradition for downtown, and is one of my favorite events of the year," said Mayor Karl Dean. "With the city's tree lighting ceremony on the same night, the first Friday in December will mark the official start of the holiday season in Nashville. I can think of no better way to get into the spirit of the season than with music, lights, and floats -- not to mention Santa Claus himself -- all centered on the theme of giving to others. I hope everyone will come out and help us celebrate the holidays in Music City."

Lipscomb University's Theater Department presents Wolf Calls and Pig Tales, a re-telling of the Three Little Pigs nursery rhyme, Dec. 1-3, in Collins Alumni Auditorium on the Lipscomb campus. Wolf Calls and Pig Tales features a smorgasbord of animal costumes, non-stop action, and clever musical bits that illustrate there are two sides to every story. This 45-minute adaption was written by Lipscomb sophomore Rebecca Bennie and Lipscomb instructor Deb Holloway. After the Dec. 1 show, families can head over to the Allen Arena mall where Lighting of the Green offers free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, and a free outdoor holiday concert featuring Amy Grant, former Gaither Vocal Band member Guy Penrod and other local musical guests.

The Boulevard Bolt, organized by volunteers, is a collaborative effort of Immanuel Baptist Church, St. George’s Episcopal Church and The Temple Congregation Ohabai Sholom in Nashville. A Charlie Brown Christmas, one of America’s most beloved and most successful TV Christmas classics, is being brought to Nashville, Tenn. by Gaylord Opryland Resort for the world’s first and only ICE! featuring A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Schulz. The colorful, interactive ice sculpture world will tell the story of Charlie Brown and his friends as he asks, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?,” and they discover the answer together. From the first scene on the ice-skating pond to the transformation of Charlie Brown’s tree, the uplifting story will be brought to life in 2 million pounds of ice, creating new treasured memories from Charles Schulz’s quintessential 1965 animated production. The Peanuts characters’ sculptures, slides and rooms, literally constructed of ice, will be hand-carved by artisans brought to the resort from Harbin, China, which is home to the internationally famous Harbin Ice Festival.
