Few families have had such a major impact on country music as the Williamses. This 5,000 square foot major exhibition examines the personal lives of Hank Williams and Hank Williams Jr. and explores the dynamics that inspired some of the most influential country music ever recorded.

See the connections between these iconic figures and their creative heirs and discover how American music continues to be measured by the standards they set. To tell the story, Hank Williams Jr., Jett Williams and members of the Williams family have offered over 200 rare artifacts never seen by the public, enabling the Museum to create an unforgettably compelling saga of love, heartache and redemption. The voices and music of all family members are heard throughout the exhibit. This major exhibition will present an intimate, behind-the-scenes portrait of a great American musical dynasty. Come learn more about the family at the foundation of country music.

ALIAS presents the first concert of the 2009-10 season on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2009. The concert will honor veterans with performances of two works. The first is the World Premiere of the chamber arrangement of Always, Always by Pulitzer-prizewinning composer Paul Moravec. Scored for baritone solo, clarinet and string quartet, Always, Always uses the text of a letter from a Civil War soldier to his wife. The second piece, An Unlikely Suspect, was composed by Jason Sagebiel, a veteran who was a Marine sniper in Iraq.

ALIAS will continue its two-year series Emerging Voices, focusing on the work of women composers, by presenting String Quartet No. 1 by American composer Nancy Galbraith and four Songs by Amy Beach.

Our winter concert this year includes five eclectic works ranging from 1690 to 1894 to 1983 to 2006. Composer of the latest work, Deborah Kavasch, also an accomplished soprano singer, will join ALIAS to sing her own work.

Sing Me Back Home is the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum’s permanent exhibit, an exciting, multi-layered journey through the life of country music. 

Through artifacts, photographs, original recordings, archival video, newly produced films, touchscreen interactive media and beautifully rendered text panels, Sing Me Back Home immerses visitors in the history and sounds of country music, its meanings and the lives and voices of many of its honored personalities.

A self-guided tour covering two floors of the Museum, Sing Me Back Home tells the story of country music from its pre-commercial roots in the nineteenth century through its vibrant life in the twenty-first century. Organized chronologically, the story moves through large subjects such as “Country During the War Years,” while each glass artifact case has a unique theme. Visitors can read about the music and its makers or let the powerful photos, instruments, costumes - and especially the music - tell the story by themselves.

Throughout your journey you are able to see the two-floor, glassed-in central archives where the Museum’s vast collection is housed and where Museum staff are seen working with historical artifacts and recordings. This unprecedented view into the core archives is like a window into a shared history and the processes from which the Museum exhibits emerge.

At the close of the journey, visitors enter the Hall of Fame Rotunda, the hallowed space where the Country Music Hall of Fame® members are honored alongside American master Thomas Hart Benton’s famous last painting, The Sources of Country Music.

Sing Me Back Home is just what the title suggests: an exploration of the power of music to make living history and to connect us to our deepest feelings.

We pay tribute to two unforgettable pieces of music featured in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Györgi Ligeti’s Atmosphères is a gripping exploration of orchestral sonority, while Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra is surely one of the best-known pieces in all of classical music, thanks to its memorable appearance in the opening sequence of Kubrick’s film. GRAMMY®-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman returns to perform Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a work noted for its fireworks at the keyboard and its brilliantly conceived orchestration. Laura Turner Concert Hall will crackle with the bracing, sensuous rhythms of tango music as brilliantly imagined by the composer Astor Piazzolla, who brought a new level of sophistication to Argentina’s most famous musical export. Edgar Allan Poe’s resonant poem served as inspiration for Rachmaninoff’s choral symphony The Bells, which would prove to be one of the composer’s own favorite works. The iconoclastic modern Russian master Stravinsky looked to the Old Testament for his Symphony of Psalms, creating a wholly original work of liturgical music — notable for its unique scoring and its intensity of feeling. Both of these dynamic works will feature the stirring voices of the Nashville Symphony Chorus, joined by soloists Twyla Robinson, Bryan Griffin and Darren K. Stokes. One of America’s most frequently performed composers, Lowell Liebermann will unveil a new work that reveals his simultaneous embrace of tradition and innovation.

One of the most innovative figures in classical music today, Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki is world-renowned for his boldly resonant music, which is rich with layers of rhythm and texture. He makes a rare visit to Nashville to lead a specially chosen program that includes his own Concerto for Piano. With a remarkable scope that recalls the symphonies of Mahler, but rendered in Penderecki’s singular voice, the work will feature the gifted pianist Barry Douglas. In Shostakovich’s alternatively contemplative and lively Symphony No. 6, the Russian composer sought to convey “the moods of spring, joy, youth.”

Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a Nashville favorite, returns to Schermerhorn Symphony Center to perform Richard Strauss’ Burleske, which promises to be a sparkling showpiece for this captivating performer. Written early in the composer’s career, the work alternates between moments of seriousness and playfulness, offering vivid glimpses of Strauss’ emergent genius. The year 2010 marks the centennial of the birth of Samuel Barber, one of the most distinctive voices in 20th century American music. His Symphony in One Movement is richly dramatic, rippling with his lyrical, expressive style. Respighi’s popular symphonic poem Fontane di Roma evokes the majestic fountains of Italy’s grandest city at different times of the day.

Award-winning soloist Ingrid Fliter will animate Chopin’s Concerto for Piano No. 2 with a combination of impeccable technique and elegant sensitivity. Actually composed as the first of Chopin’s piano concertos, the piece allows listeners to hear the composer’s budding genius as he began to transform writing for the piano. Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 represents a dramatic turning point in the Austrian composer’s career, with the rich tapestry of orchestral colors giving expression to moods of despondency, anger, yearning and, finally, utter joyousness. The unsurpassed slow movement, one of Mahler’s most profound utterances, was showcased to unforgettable effect in Luchino Visconti’s 1971 film Death in Venice.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 Bartók: Bluebeard’s Castle.

Bartók’s early masterpiece Bluebeard’s Castle recounts the classic fairy tale about a bloodthirsty nobleman and his castle of horrors. As his young bride walks through the doors of the castle, Bartók’s music builds in dramatic intensity, leading to a chilling conclusion. This unique collaborative partnership with Cheekwood Museum of Art and Nashville Opera director John Hoomes will feature stunning glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly, which represent each of the doors in Bluebeard’s castle. In his Symphony No. 1, Beethoven embarked on what would soon be a string of monumental works destined to change the course of classical music.

Kris Kristofferson will be honored as a BMI Icon at the U.S. music rights organization’s 57th annual Country Awards, the oldest awards saluting country’s top music makers. Slated for Tuesday, November 10 at BMI’s Music Row offices in Nashville, the black-tie, invitation-only gala will also celebrate the songwriters of the past year’s most-performed country songs from the extensive BMI catalog.

The Icon designation is given to BMI songwriters and artists who have had “a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” Kristofferson, who will be saluted with an all-star musical tribute that evening, joins an elite list of past honorees that includes country music stalwarts Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Whisperin’ Bill Anderson, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn and last year’s honoree Hank Williams, Jr., along with multi-genre nobility like the Bee Gees, Isaac Hayes, Ray Davies, James Brown, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Steve Winwood and more.

Hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Nashville Writer/Publisher VP Jody Williams, the 57th Annual Country Awards will recognize the songwriters and publishers of the top BMI country songs played on American radio and television during the previous year. The 7th Annual Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza comes to Nashville's Ryman Auditorium! The BSO is one of the only acts from the Swing Revival of the 1990s which still maintains a high level of popularity. The BSO is commonly seen during the December holidays covering Christmas songs and often play the Rockefeller Center tree lighting ceremony. Besides Setzer, the rhythm section is anchored by drummer Bernie Dresel and bassist Johnny "Spaz" Hatton. During live concert performances, Setzer will often dismiss the horn players and play a set of rockabilly using just this trio, in the manner of the Stray Cats.

Having victoriously headlined both Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will return to the modest confines of stadiums and arenas as New Jersey’s finest announced a new batch of fall shows in support of the band’s Working on a Dream.

Bruce Springsteen said, "Towards the end of recording Magic, excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O'Brien heard the new songs, he said, 'Let's keep going.' Over the course of the next year, that's just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year's tour. I hope Working on a Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end." Working on a Dream is Bruce Springsteen's twenty-fourth album and was recorded and mixed at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional recording in New York City, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

Tin Pan South is America's largest music festival dedicated to songs and songwriters. Produced by the Nashville Songwriters Association International, the festival is a fundraiser in support of NSAI's efforts in Congress. Each year, in late March/early April, several hundred songwriters perform approximately 100 shows over the course of the week. For five days and nights the festival encompasses Nashville venues, elevating songwriters and the contribution they make to the city and to the world of music. It's a feel-good musical that incorporates timeless tunes and dynamic dancing, featuring all the familiar classics and contemporary twists. From Glenn Miller's memorable melodies to Count Basie's Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, the Big And Era is in full Swing, February 12-28, directed by Kate Adams Johnson.

Originally unthinkable, tragically sinkable. Senior Center for the Arts will commemorate the 98th anniversary of The Titanic tragedy, April 15 - May 2. With a cast of 70 and realistic visual effects Titanic, The Musical will no doubt have thespians all aboard and swifty sailing into the Nashville Dinner Theater. The national tour of the Broadway production 9 to 5: The Musical will open at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, September 21-26, 2010, TPAC's 30th Anniversary season. The Columbia State Commercial Entertainment Program's spring extravaganza is always one of the most anticipated performances in the series each year. The actors, players, dancers, and technicians bring with them training, experience and the enthusiasm for entertaining. Past performances include Cinderella, Grease, Nunsense and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Columbia State's Commercial Entertainment Program is one of only two programs in the country to specifically train talented students for careers as singers, dancers and actors. John Darnielle is one of the most imaginative lyricists of his generation.
