To learn about the people and places in The Widow of the South book, we offer, in conjunction with Carnton Plantation, a joint Widow of the South tour. The tour includes the 90-minute walking tour of downtown Franklin and an hour-long guided house tour of Carnton Plantation in one combined price. For the Carnton portion of the tour, a reservation is not required. Simply visit Carnton during its regular hours. Please note: The last tour of the day is at 4:00pm at Carnton. For the downtown portion of the tour, call us at 615-400-3808 for a reservation and time for your tour.

The Widow of the South, written by long-time Franklin resident and Historic Carnton Plantation Association board member Robert Hicks, centers on the life of Carrie McGavock, the mistress of Carnton before, during and after the Civil War. After the hardcover release in September, 2005, the book rose to #5 and spent eight weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list in the fall of 2005. Now in paperback and published in French, Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin, the book gives readers an understanding of the historical significance of the Battle of Franklin, described by National Geographic as "the most unjustly forgotten battle of the entire Civil War." (April, 2005)

The Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Jules de Balincourt, a retrospective exhibition of works by the renowned New York-based artist, curated by Joseph Whitt. The work of Jules de Balincourt straddles a difficult line between the raw necessity of folk art and an unexpected mastery of abstraction's compositional complexities. The French-born, California-raised artist was recently dubbed by Artforum International magazine as "one of the most challenging painters working today." Drawing from several important private collections, this exhibition will present an overview of de Balincourt's artistic practice from 2002 to today.

Lecture: Jules de Balincourt will present a lecture about his work, Wednesday, October 22 , 7:00pm in Room 103 of Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt campus.

Richter Gallery is pleased to bring this important artist and exhibition to Nashville. In his forward to Jazz, Giants and Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard, Quincy Jones, wrote, "When people think of jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman's." In addition to the internationally known Jazz photographs, this exhibit will also feature Herman Leonard's rarely seen fashion work and behind-the-scenes photographs of such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday. "I wanted to do with light what artists do with a line sketch, show the whole character," said Herman in an interview with Departures Magazine. And that is what Herman has done over his entire lifetime and continues to do at the age of 85. He elevated music photography into an art form. His use of lighting, atmosphere and a spirituality of sorts cannot be found elsewhere. Therefore it is only fitting that Herman will be presented with the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Portraiture in October of this year.

Exhibition Reception with the Artist: Saturday, November 8, 6:00pm-10:00pm in conjunction with Artrageous.

Individuals are encouraged to call the Nashville-based Adult Children of Bipolar Support Network at 7 p.m. (CST) Dec. 10 (Wednesday) to link up with author/speaker Angela Grett and others who are learning to cope with the struggles of having a parent, sibling, spouse or partner with bipolar disorder. The conference call gives hurting people the opportunity to anonymously share their experiences, learn about educational resources, and receive encouragement from their peers. The networking session will be moderated by Valri Bromfield, a staff therapist and counselor for the Vanderbilt University Psychological and Counseling Center in Nashville. "The first ACB Support Network session in October was a great success," said Grett, network founder and author of the book My Mother's Bipolar, So What Am I?. "We laughed, we cried, we shared, and we listened. What became clear to me was that coming together as people with shared experiences and challenges is one of the most healing gifts one can give oneself." The toll-free conference calls, which last from one to two hours, are offered once a month. Grett also has established an on-line forum (blog) that allows ACBSN participants to discuss important topics on bipolar disorder anytime day or night. Individuals who are interested in calling into the Adult Children of Bipolar Support Network on Dec. 10 or subsequent dates are required to register at http://www.childrenofbipolar.com. A $5 registration fee covers the cost of the conference call service. For more information or to sign up for the next call, visit http://www.childrenofbipolar.com.
