The Last Night of Ballyhoo takes place in Atlanta in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta's elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season.

A Hard-Boiled Christmas is an all-new holiday revue featuring some of your favorite Boiler Room cast members, highlights from previous BRT holiday shows, sketch comedy, and tons of great holiday music.

This hilarious, slapstick 1940’s farce takes place in a quaint English vicarage. The vicar's wife is a former actress and with a setup like that- vicar plus stage diva- can equal nothing BUT a mass of hi-jinks! Add to this four men dressed like priests (two who are imposters), the vicar's wife pretending to be married to one who's not her real husband, a bishop dressed in his pajamas, a nosy neighbor in the coat closet and a silent maid who are ALL being interrogated by a British army sergeant looking for an escaped POW. In this sequel to the ever popular hit Smoke on the Mountain, the Sanders family returns to Mount Pleasant, NC home of the Mount Pleasant Pickle Factory. It's Christmas Eve, 1941. Reverend Oglethorpe has invited them to the Baptist Church to sing and witness, getting the congregation into the down home holiday spirit before the boys, including one of the Sanders' own, are shipped off to World War II. More than two dozen Christmas carols, many of them vintage hymns, and hilarious yuletide stories from the Sanders family keep the audience laughing, clapping and singing along with bluegrass Christmas favorites. Richly entertaining, this wildly infections musical brings cheer to audiences eager to see how their friends from Smoke on the Mountain have been getting along.

The Sanders family returns to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in the mountains of North Carolina on the Christmas Eve following Pearl Harbor. The Columbia State Commercial Entertainment Program's spring extravaganza is always one of the most anticipated performances in the series each year. The actors, players, dancers, and technicians bring with them training, experience and the enthusiasm for entertaining. Past performances include Cinderella, Grease, Nunsense and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Columbia State's Commercial Entertainment Program is one of only two programs in the country to specifically train talented students for careers as singers, dancers and actors. Southern Fried Murder is a murder mystery dinner theater that will be directed by Cyndie Verbeten. Don't miss it!

In this exciting dance workshop series, participants will have the opportunity to work with three top class choreographers on Musical Theatre Jazz and Tap. Participants will learn technique and musical theatre style combinations. October 5 and 19 Rod Reiner will lead Musical Theatre Jazz. October 12, Pam Atha will teach a different style of Musical Theatre jazz. Bruce Stegmann will teach his own session of Musical Theatre Jazz on October 26, followed by Tap on Nov 2 and 9. Participants may register for classes individually or take all six for a discounted tuition fee.

This workshop will include a variety of topics including what casting directors look for, empowering yourself as an actor, calming your nerves, taking risks, analyzing a script, making strong choices, audition etiquette, working with a partner, image and type and how to book a job. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to work on camera and receive direction in the takes and feedback in the review. Each participant will receive information to take home with tons of tips, advice, local acting websites, books to read, union info, and agency contact information.

This actor’s workshop consists of some of the elements essential to the appreciation and performance of Shakespeare’s plays. Subjects covered include scansion—the basics of blank verse; tricks of the trade—insights and techniques for the clever actor; voice production and breathing; research—historical, geographical, personal, and mythological; vocabulary and etymology; imagery, ideation, and characterization; pithy observations on Shakespeare and his theatre. The second session will give the actors an opportunity to prepare selected Shakespearean material using techniques learned in the first session.

Pitch, volume, tempo, texture, staccato, legato, and the strategic use of silence: These are all elements of music, right? Is combining them in different ways also a key to unlocking characters onstage, making each of your roles different from each other, thereby extending your range as an actor? You betcha! In this workshop, we’ll work with individual elements of voice, exploring your range and facility, and use your imagination to breathe new life into your next audition piece or role. We will start working with a delightful piece called The Stinky Cheese Man and then work on a piece of your own—bring a one to two-minute piece of dialogue or monologue. Start breathing before you come!

In order to take away some of the mystery from the audition process, this workshop brings together the Artistic Directors from four of Nashville’s professional theatres—People’s Branch Theatre, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre, and Nashville Shakespeare Festival to provide participants with a glimpse into the process. Participants will present a three-minute audition consisting of two contrasting monologues and receive immediate feedback from these directors—thoughts on the monologue choice; ideas for the actor on how to be considered for callbacks and casting; in general, what the directors look for in open call auditions. In addition to hearing other participants’ audition feedback, there will be a half-hour break midway through the master class to provide an opportunity for more informal discussion and networking.

This workshop will focus on scenework from a film or play script. Actors will have the opportunity to work on a scene ON-CAMERA with a partner and receive direction and feedback. Topics will include working with a partner in an audition; script analysis; thinking like the character; being truthful; making interesting positive choices; risk taking; empowering yourself to do your best; analysis of performance. Each participant will receive a handout with tons of tips, advice, local acting websites, books to read, union info, and agency contact information.

The first two hours of Rapier 101/102 will introduce/reinforce the basic techniques of Rapier stage combat: parries, movement, evades, attacks, etc. After a short break, Rapier 102 will move on to more advanced Rapier moves: including many fancy-sounding Italian terms. This workshop is appropriate for beginning and intermediate fighters.

Participants in this workshop will be sent sides to prepare as they would for a callback. After performing the sides, participants will receive direction and advice on the most effective ways to prepare for callbacks. The workshops will also focus on how best to handle the “cold reading”—when actors are given new material with limited time to prepare. Participants will be given additional “cold reading” sides and one hour to put their new knowledge into practice.

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. Noises Off is a play within a play, in this case a dreadful comedy titled Nothing On - the type of play in which young girls run about in their underwear, old men drop their trousers and many doors continually open and shut. Nothing On is set in "a delightful 16th century possett mill" that has been converted to a modern dwelling for which renters are solicited; the fictional playwright is appropriately name Robin Housemonger. Each of the three acts of Noises Off contains a performance of the first act of Nothing On.

Rumpelstiltskin, the last of his kind, dances alone in the darkness before a leaping fire, casting a giant shadow on a craggy mountain face as he relates in ominous verse his plan to "find a child of my own to chase away the dark". Huddled around a fire in a primitive nomadic village, Uta conspires with his mother to swindle the king out of his yearly tribute by inventing a false prophecy that his daughter, Alana, would at the first full moon of each year, spin straw into gold. As Rumpelstiltskin peeks out from a nomad's tent, Alana is abducted by the king and his reluctant son, Marius, and taken to the king's castle, where she is sent to work spinning straw into gold. In the castle the mood lightens as romance blossoms between Alana and Marius and comedy reigns among the royal servants; Old Nanny, Cook, Birdy and her niece, Pigeon. Still, the rhyming Rumpelstiltskin is manipulating every step of the way, and there is always the underlying unease that he will appear and exact his dreadful payment.

In the early years of the 1940's Americans found a renewed sense of patriotism as World War II changed their lives forever. The men went to war and the women went to work. Wives, sisters and girlfriends all did their part for Uncle Sam by going to work in their country's factories. Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous burlesque stripper, Gypsy tells the story of Rose, an overbearing stage mother who is determined to break into the big time by pushing the vaudeville career of her younger daughter June. A young boy named Ralphie Parker only wants one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder BB gun. However, he is not sure he will ever make it to Christmas, between his brother Randy and the school bully Scut Farkus. Whenever he tells someone how much he wants it, he/she tells him that he will shoot his eye out and refuses to get it for him. Even a department store Santa Claus tells him the same thing. After Ralphie gets a C+, he gets teased again by Scut. In response, Ralphie beats him very badly while cursing loudly. However, his parents do not get mad at him, and on Christmas morning, he gets the BB gun, since his father had one at that age. When he goes to try it out, the bullet ricochets and knocks off his glasses, which he accidentally steps upon while looking for them. He makes up a story about an icicle, and his parents believe him. In the end, a horde of dogs come in and steal the Christmas turkey, so his family goes out for “Chinese turkey,” or duck.

Middle Tennessee's top college and high school poets, emcees, and spoken word artists will convene to showcase the year's top youth spoken word performances. The State of the Word is an opportunity for Tennesseans to hear from the next generation of leaders as they elucidate their hopes, dreams, fears, and concerns. Co-hosted by Youth Speaks Nashville and Vandy Spoken Word, The State of the Word is the region's leading youth poetry event.

Last year, more than 300 people watched over 40 poets from 7 universities and 12 high schools and middle schools perform. This year, organizers anticipate representatives from Vanderbilt, Belmont, TSU, MTSU, Western Kentucky, Fisk, Maplewood, Hunters Lane, Overton, Stratford, Big Picture, Hillsboro, MLK, Hume Fogg, LEAD, Jere Baxter, and East Literature. The State of the Word is sponsored by Vanderbilt University's Commons, Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, Admissions, Writing Studio, and Office of Leadership Development & Intercultural Affairs. This April's Mid South youth poet delegation returned home from the national finals with the winner of both the individual poet and emcee competitions. The team also placed TSU student Zuki Modunkwu on a green team of poets who perform at environmental events and conferences around the nation. Youth Speaks Nashville has been building a culture of literacy in Middle Tennessee since last summer by conducting creative writing and spoken word residencies, workshops, shows, slams, and open mics at colleges, high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and youth organizations. Youth poetry is trending across the nation as young people realize this new opportunity to express themselves and develop their voice.

The African American Playwrights Exchange and gallery F @ Scarritt-Bennett Center will host a dramatic reading of the new play by Dr. Frank Dobson, executive director of Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, Young Messiahs Fly on Monday, Nov. 16.

This timely new play, written by Dr. Frank Dobson, novelist, playwright, poet, and executive director of Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, is a story about the rise and fall of a gifted young black athlete – another young black millionaire in the making – who faces tragedy from the aftermath of a chance encounter with the law. This thought-provoking play asks its audience to consider the realities of young black celebrity, money, fame, family ties and tragedy, in a story straight out of today’s headlines.

The play will be read by Rashad Rayford, Molly Breen, Roman Bryant, Scott Russell, and other actors, and will be directed by Shawn Whitsell, artistic director of The Destiny Theatre Experience. The artwork of Channing Bailey, a resident artist at gallery F and currently a senior at TSU, will be featured.
