Cheekwood's Museum of Art has been selected to house the Matilda Geddings Gray Foundation Collection, among the world's most significant compilation of Faberge pieces. The Collection includes 57 rare pieces highlighted by three Russian Imperial Easter eggs, and a number of important functional items, fantasy items and floral works.

Including more than 120 photographs by such artists as Man Ray, Eugène Atget, Brassaï, Hans Bellmer and André Kertész, Twilight Visions will celebrate Paris as the literal and metaphoric foundation of Surrealism. In addition to examining the revolutionary social, aesthetic and political activities of the movement between the world wars, the exhibition will focus on works -- predominantly photographs as well as select films, books and period ephemera -- that evoke the mystery of the chance encounters experienced by the Surrealists as they wandered through the labyrinthine city streets. 

Organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, guest curator Therese Lichtenstein, Ph.D. Accompanying the exhibition will be a full-color illustrated exhibition catalogue, published by the University of California Press, with essays by Dr. Lichtenstein, as well as by other noted scholars, including British historian Colin Jones, Julia Kelly, lecturer at the University of Manchester; and Whitney Chadwick, professor of art at San Francisco State University.

The exhibition will travel to the International Center of Photography in New York, Jan. 29–May 9, 2010, and to the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Ga. June 4–Sept. 30, 2010.

In the 1950s, William H. Lane (1914–1995), the owner of a small Massachusetts manufacturing plant, began assembling an extraordinary collection of American modern art, which in 1990 was donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. With major paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, Arthur G. Dove, Stuart Davis, Charles Sheeler and other artists, the exhibition shows the collector’s passion for art that reflects the diversity and dynamism of American modernism.

New York-based artist Oliver Herring collaborates with friends and strangers in the creation of his sculptures, performances, and video art. This exhibition includes figurative works in which the artist first makes photographic close-ups of his subjects’ entire bodies. He then sculpts the form of their bodies out of polystyrene. The photographs are cut into jigsaw puzzle-like shapes and adhered to the sculpted figures, lending the uncanny quality of a photograph seen in the round. Herring manipulates the color and value contrasts in his photographic fragments, giving the sculptures a camouflage-like surface, emphasizing the inherent artificiality and social masking that are a subliminal consequence of photography.

One of postwar America’s preeminent sculptors, George Rickey was a pioneer in the field of kinetic art. From the 1950s until his death in 2002, he employed his deep knowledge of physics and aerodynamics to produce works in which the lyrical interaction between industrial materials and the surrounding forces of nature creates an experience of profound beauty and philosophical resonance. 

Rickey’s sculptures are composed of geometrical metal forms, which swivel on pendulums, ball bearings, and knife-sharp edges to follow pre-determined paths in response to the slightest movement of the wind. One of the centerpieces of the Hirshhorn Museum’s internationally renowned sculpture collection, Rickey’s Three Red Lines is 36 feet tall and features three pointed arms that gracefully move back and forth in an implied parabolic arc.

The Frist Center is pleased to display Three Red Lines on our front patio located on the Broadway side of the building. Composed of geometric elements that have been welded together in abstract configurations, Fletcher Benton’s sculptures explore tensions between space and volume, balance and precariousness, and simplicity and complexity. Truckin’ Jumbo Geo is from a series that also evokes mechanized transportation, reflecting the artist’s fascination with bicycles, racecars, trucks, and locomotives. 

In 2008 Benton received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture from the International Sculpture Center in Hamilton, New Jersey. Previous recipients have included Louise Bourgeois, Anthony Caro, Christo and Jeanne Claude, George Rickey, Mark di Suvero, and other illustrious sculptors working since the mid-twentieth century.

In conjunction with the Nashville Public Library’s call for a city-wide celebration of beloved author Mark Twain, the Frist Center will present a selection of drawings and watercolors narrating Life on the Mississippi, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by another promoter of American narratives and everyday life, Thomas Hart Benton. 

A second section of the exhibition will focus on another source of inspiration for the artist - one particularly appropriate for Nashville - folk music and musicians. Benton’s lifelong admiration of Americana music is well known, yet works of this subject matter have not yet been assembled as an exhibition.

Attracting a stunning mix of glamorous partygoers from across the nation, Artrageous has attained near-legendary status as Nashville's largest indoor charity event. It was named the "Top Charity Event" of 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2006 by the Nashville Scene readers poll. In 1996, Artrageous was selected for the short list of the South's top parties in The Gay Manual. From early portraiture to Pop art, American artists have always borrowed from the broad reservoir of imagery broadly defined as Americana. Reviewing art from two centuries, this exhibition presents images of America revealed through the eyes of artists.

Americana Redefined features some of the highlights of Cheekwood’s collection, including a nineteenth-century view of Belmont Mansion by an anonymous artist, a genre painting by Eastman Johnson, realist works by The Group of Eight (Arthur B. Davies, William Glackens, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan), American Scene painting, and many artists from the post-World War II generation. For the first time in several years, the famous pair of portraits that Andy Warhol and Jamie Wyeth painted of one other will be exhibited again at Cheekwood.

The Arts Center of Cannon County and the Cannon Cultural Museum are proud to announce the 2009/2010 exhibition, “From Necessity to Invention: Tools, Machinery and Culture” exploring how the development of culture is directly affected by tools and machines.

This exhibit looks at the advent of both hand implements and machinery on agriculture in Middle Tennessee, on the development of the white oak basketry culture and chair making tradition in Cannon County, and on the production of moonshine whiskey in the area. The exhibition will also examine the “Stump Jumper” tradition from Reel Foot Lake in the northwestern corner of the state.

The Cannon Cultural Museum’s second exhibition features artifacts from the Gertrude and Ben Caldwell Collection and the Cannon County Historical Society Collection and is sponsored by the Arts Center of Cannon County, the Cannon County Historical Society and Gertrude and Ben Caldwell.

TSU will host two visiting artists -- Carl Pope and Aisha Cousins -- for a joint exhibition. Carl Pope's work has been shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art (Biennial) and MoMA. His work explores the use of text and language as it informs identity, specifically the black identity. His project, "The Bad Air Smelled of Roses," is shown as an introduction to his work as he partners with TSU's Space for New Media and Nashville artists on a collaborative print project (Spring 2010). Aisha Cousins is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work explores the black female identity through combining the cultural signifiers of hair braiding and jump rope.

TSU's Space for New Media Inaugural Exhibition honors the intention and work of the Cause Collective. Along the Way is a 30' wide, 10' tall, Sundance "New Frontiers" video from the Cause Collective, a team of artists, designers and ethnographers who create innovative art in the public realm. Their projects explore and enliven public spaces by creating a dynamic conversation between issues, sites, and public audience.

Along the Way is a 20-minute video mosaic that includes over 1,500 videos taken by the artists featuring the people and places of Oakland, California and the surrounding Bay Area. This piece bears witness to a nine month journey that the artists undertook among the people of the Bay Area.

Trace the progression of imaging from the 1890s box cameras to the mid-1980s instant cameras.

Helpful Information: Children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times and in all areas of the Museum. Free parking for Museum visitors is available behind the Museum at the top of the hill off South Second Street. Sundays are free for everyone!

The work of artist Erika Wollam will be on display at the Shelby Bottoms Nature Center adjacent to Shelby Park, beginning November 14, 2009 and running through the end of December. The exhibit features work based on Shelby Bottoms, made over the course of the past four years of the artist walking regularly at the urban greenway.

The exhibit involves video, installation, photography and drawing with an interactive feature where visitors to the Greenway are encouraged to participate through sharing their own experiences at Shelby Bottoms. Wollam is a graduate of Vermont College of Fine Arts and is currently an adjunct instructor at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film.

Vivien Fryd, Ph.D., professor and chair of the history of art department at Vanderbilt University, will examine the art of the early American Modernists associated with the so-called Stieglitz circle-painters Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Joseph Stella, and Charles Sheeler as well as photographers Gertrude Käisebeir, Anne Brigman, Alfred Stieglitz, and Edward Steichen. The styles, themes, and historical contexts of these modern visual images will be examined, focusing especially upon themes of sexuality, the city, spirituality, and nature.

You have seen Twilight Visions: Surrealism, Photography, and Paris and delved into the minds of the Surrealists. Now learn more about the tumultuous yet edifying times they lived in by attending the Frist Center's three part Off the Wall lecture series being held in conjunction with the exhibition.

Kelli Shay Hix, moving image archivist at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, will discuss the techniques and goals of the creators of selected early Parisian Surrealist films, as well as the history behind their works.

The post–World War I Parisian Surrealists used the mediums of writing, painting, and photography to expose the “superior reality of certain forms of previously neglected associations.” But it was the medium of moving image film which gave the Surrealists the opportunity to create a nearly complete parallel world in which reason took a backseat to dreams, and in which traditional editing processes were used to confuse, rather than to clarify, normal patterns of reason. Though entertaining, these films are far from escapist. Much of the meaning in the films relies on the viewers' expectations, reactions, and interpretations of the films. This cinema is not meant to re-enact dreams or to tell a narrative, but to acknowledge a reality “outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.”

The Contrarian Ensemble is widely known and sought after by folk and contra dancers in Middle Tennessee. This delightful community band, comprising guitar, mandolin, accordion, fiddle, recorder and percussion, plays music of and by the folk. From contemporary reels, jigs and waltzes, to music of the early 17th century, the Contrarians will inspire you to rise and dance. And visitors are welcome to do just that.

Designed for 5-10 year olds, the Frist Center Kids Club offers exciting opportunities for children to discover, explore, and create art. Free membership includes a Kids Club card, rewards for participation, hands-on activities in the Martin ArtQuest Gallery, and monthly projects in the art studios.

This exhibition is composed of 56 paintings from a great but largely unsung collection in Ponce, Puerto Rico, begun in 1950 by the philanthropist and governor Luis Ferré. The museum is a premier institution for Baroque and Victorian painting. The most acclaimed glass artist of our time, Seattle-based artist Dale Chihuly is beloved for his abstract evocations of sea life, flowers, and other graceful subjects. This site-specific exhibition will present selections from a variety of renowned series, among them Seaforms, Millefiori, Macchia, Ikebana, and Persians.

The launch of Christian Dior’s “New Look” in 1947 marked the beginning of a momentous decade in fashion history, which Dior himself called a “golden age.” The couture houses of Paris and London, which had traditionally served wealthy private clients, opened boutiques and licensed their designs, thereby becoming global brands and household names. Through clothing (primarily evening dresses and suits), shoes, and photographs, this exhibition demonstrates how designers such as Dior, Balenciaga, and Chanel brought glamour back to Europe after World War II.

The exhibition includes approximately 100 masterpieces of mid-to-late 19th-century French painting from the Musée d’Orsay, a museum in Paris dedicated to the art of the early modern period (1840s through the early 20th century). The exhibition provides a broad context for understanding the roots of Modernism by combining seminal works by innovators such as Courbet, Manet, Cézanne, Monet, and Renoir; Salon painters such as Bouguereau; and artists who moved easily between convention and innovation such as Degas, Fantin-Latour, and Whistler.

While the Musée d’Orsay continues to add works to the exhibition and the checklist has yet to be finalized, among the magnificent paintings already confirmed is James Whistler’s Arrangement in Grey and Black, Number 1, popularly known as Whistler’s Mother. The exhibition will also include works by Eduard Manet, including Le fifre and his portraits of Émile Zola, Georges Clemenceau, and Berthe Morisot. There are 11 works by Renoir, including his portrait of Claude Monet, and seven works by Degas, including Repetition d’un ballet.

Fresh paintings inspired by Grecian surroundings. Many of these works were completed en plein air (out doors, on location) during a September trip to Athens and Santorini. Come explore Greek culture, history, and geography through the expression of local artists Toni Hooper, Lori Putnam and friends.

Hooper's work transforms her experience in colors, shapes, and lines. The conclusion is sometimes abstract, sometimes representation, but always her true expression through the chosen medium. Her Greek heritage adds authenticity and flavor to our exhibition.

Putnam's contemporary impressionist style is abstract, fresh, and expressive, yet a true representation of place and time. As published in "American Art Collector" magazine, the work 'invites the viewer to enter the scene, smell the air, and feel the relentless heat of the sun.'

Society bears fruit, some of which has been gathered by gallery F in an exhibition of sculpture, installation, video, collage, and painting. This exhibit chronicles the creation of “The Plan of Nashville,” a community-based, 50-year vision of how the urban core of the city should look and work in the future. Created with the help of more than 800 Nashvillians and completed in 2004, the plan was conceived and orchestrated by the Nashville Civic Design Center, a non-profit organization committed to urban design and fostering public participation in the design process. The Plan of Nashville: Avenues to a Great City book was published by Vanderbilt University Press in 2005. The exhibit features more than 100 original drawings chronicling the city’s historic development and the plan’s vision for the future, as well as the work the NCDC has done in the past five years since the plan’s release. This is the first time these drawings have collectively appeared on display in Nashville.

In this class Whitney leads you step by step through the layered, textured, “mixed media” approach to acrylic painting. On Friday night you layer fabric, papers and collage items onto your canvas with acrylic paint. Next, we create an abstract, organic design to compliment the free-flowing nature of this painting technique. Saturday we paint in more color, add gold/silver leaf, more collage/paper items and more color. The last step is the “drizzle” step. There will also be a demonstration Saturday afternoon of the gloss technique, using an epoxy gloss.

The Rymer Gallery presents a solo show for painter Gabriel Mark who resides in Portland, Oregon, and was introduced to Nashville by a prominent musician and collector who commissioned Mark to create works for his home and album. Mark's most recent series, Urban Legend, features dark contemporary settings with allusion to man’s primal instincts and evoking a sense of angst, decadence, and longing.

Chicago artist Catherine Forster will be featured in the project room. Her room installation, Now for the Painter, is comprised of a video and ten paintings. Conceived as an homage to Turner’s last seascapes, Now for the Painter is as beautiful as it is conceptual – a study of light and mood. Click here for a preview of Forster's video.

A collaboration between the Department of Art and Residence Life, this exhibit features photos of Belmont students with items that make the student feel strong. Susan McGrew's paintings focus intently on surfaces, examining water and wood as planes of action and color. They dance with the glitter of the running stream and the flicker of the leaves. Often the background, mid-ground and front merge as the same space; flat, yet delicate and sparkling. McGrew studies and renders images of the same location for several years, allowing the viewer to explore the Tennessee woods through her eyes. McGrew focuses on the Fiery Gizzard River area, which is part of the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. When she began this body of work, McGrew painted the water only, but has since begun an exploration of the surrounding wooded areas as well. With this newer work, McGrew is partnering with The Friends of the South Cumberland State Recreation Area to bring attention to Tennessee's largest wilderness park. The region she paints sits within this 16,000 acre park, home of old-growth forest and nearly one-third of Tennessee's indigenous plants.

Timothy Weber has been a working artist/craftsman for 35 years. Along with his work with clay, Weber has worked as an arts administrator, teacher, gallery owner and advocate. Most recent full time positions have been as the Director of the Appalachian Center for Craft and as the Director of Visual Art, Craft and Media with the Tennessee Arts Commission. He has participated in scores of national juried arts festivals including the American Craft Council markets in Dallas, St Louis, Tampa and Charlotte; New Eastside Artwork, Chicago; and the American Artisan Festival, Nashville. Nationally and internationally, his works are in corporate and private collections including the Tennessee State Museum, Louisiana State University, Bell South, Amoco Corporation, Mobile Museum of Art, and the Japan Embassy to the United States. His teaching and workshop credits include Vanderbilt University, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, University of Alabama, and Danish Folk School in Denmark. Timothy continues to curate art exhibits and serves as juror for varied arts events and exhibitions. Weber is a regular panelist to review applications for individual artists’ fellowship awards, arts grant applications and public art competitions.

This body of work consists of wall mounted Neo- Primitive sculpture. All pieces are hand-built and wheel thrown, mixed media, and raku fired.     

An artist's reception will be held on November 20 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

A two person exhibit of photographic works by Clarkesville artisis Malcolm Glass and Mitzi Cross. Mr. Glass manipulates light not only to focus on the subject of the photograph, but as a tool to attempt to illuminate the work of the artist honored. Ms. Cross uses the process of solarization to enhance the merger of light with subject, breathing life into it and creating the magic and mystery.

Awakening Songs features new works by Evie Coates in The Theater Gallery at Ensworth High School. Evie Coates is an art teacher by day and a junk-diver and tinkerer by night. Inspired by time spent in the Western plains, her watercolors speak of the wild, timeworn beauty of that terrain and issue a sense of comfort and simplicity. Weathered boards, rusty hardware, old tin cans, vintage buttons and bits of wording from old hymnals are just a few of the recycled elements the artist employs in her work. Her sensibilities are decidedly vintage and light-hearted. Evie enjoys a hearty thunderstorm, some steel guitar and a good glass of Kentucky bourbon.

Nashville mixed media artist Jared Freihoefer shares with the community a love of text and books through The Magic Word. His new work incorporates collaged pages from donated books, mixed media figurative and portraiture imagery, and text from thoughts collected from the community.

Books serve as tangible proof of shared ideas. It is only through the sharing and propagation of these ideas that we are able to grow and mature as a community and as a society. The collection of stories presented in the artwork reflect the collection of stories being played out within our community. In the same way the concepts we read about transform with our interpretation of them, Jared will be literally transforming the books into new and innovative solutions. The Magic Word exhibit and installation at Blend Studio will create awareness for the need of preserving literacy and ideas shared through text. The community is invited to become directly involved in the creative process by donating books.  We encourage the public to contribute to the project and interact with the bookshelf by bringing books to the studio during regular hours, as well as the opening reception during the First Saturday Gallery Crawl on November 7.

M.E.A.T. by Joshua Black Wilkins is a photographic exhibit using the traditional medium of tintypes or ferrotypes. They are portraits shot on 4x5 metal plates which have been prepared and developed by hand in a darkroom. Very little has changed in 150 years regarding the process of making tintypes, though the subjects in this exhibit may not seem "vintage" or "timeless." M.E.A.T. is a series of female portraits where the notion of the female human body as a piece of meat is exaggerated by the use of a rubber pig head.

Jerome Epstein's Refuse of Man also bends stereotypes by creating a dialogue between waste and treasure; objects of disregard and objects of art. Epstein's work involves a multitude of mediums and techniques. Each sculpture is meticulously crafted, with hours poured into repurposing everyday discarded items.

Opening Reception: Sunday, October 18, 6:00pm-10:00pm will celebrate the harvest season with music, food and pumpkin carving. This event is open to all in the community 18 or older. *Bring a pumpkin to the opening for a carving contest.*

Lori Anne Parker, Ph.D. candidate in philosophy and editor at the Frist Center, will examine the art of Hyman Bloom and Karl Zerbe, two American painters associated with the Boston Expressionist school that emerged in the 1930s and 1940s. During their careers Bloom and Zerbe dedicated themselves to portraying the human figure, even when the popularity of doing so was in decline. Using paint to express the weight and demands of the flesh, both artists portrayed the living (and dead) body in ways that explore the human subject as a manifestation of embodied experience the subject as body, the body as self. Paintings in the exhibition that will be discussed are Bloom's Female Corpse Back View (1947) and Zerbe?s self-portrait Job (1949).

You have seen Twilight Visions: Surrealism, Photography, and Paris and delved into the minds of the Surrealists. Now learn more about the tumultuous yet edifying times they lived in by attending the Frist Center's three-part Off the Wall lecture series being held in conjunction with the exhibition.

In the early twentieth century, Surrealist writers such as André Breton, Louis Aragon, and Paul Éluard envisioned the city of Paris as an interactive playground for literary experimentation and an exploration of the unconscious. Dr. Lisa Weiss, assistant director of the W. T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies and lecturer in French at Vanderbilt University, will address the literary roots of Surrealism and consider how the movement’s poetry and prose intersect with the city’s urban landscape and everyday life.

Chattanooga artist John Petrey will display several of his vintage dress designs fashioned from a menagerie of refuse. The material he uses includes everything from old barn wood to asphalt shingles to used bottle caps. Petrey began his artistic career as a talented photographer in the advertising business but in 2004 decided to instead pursue his passion for sculpture. He states “my work can be lighthearted and whimsical or deeply symbolic.”

The Rymer Gallery is pleased to announce a solo show for Emily Leonard opening Saturday, November 21, and closing Saturday, January 2. Miss Leonard’s paintings speak thoughtfully of our relationship with the natural world. Her practiced technique with oil is elemental in creating her spellbinding landscapes, with primary focus on the hauntingly mysterious way that light breaks or ends each day.Miss Leonard’s landscapes often appear abstract when viewed up close; however, at a distance, they come into focus with unparalleled luminosity. Her paintings communicate strong emotion and reaction to her environment with a contemporary style. Emily is a Tennessee native and a third-generation painter, but she has definitely developed her own voice in expressing her art.

Artsy Mamas "Green Gifts" workshop will be taught by Jodi Reeves from the creative JAR, What is Artsy Mamas? Artsy Mamas is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, a blog/website, a network, the facilitator of programming that educates and empowers mothers and their children in the arts, and a movement that encourages mothers to get their art on while developing meaningful relationships with their children, other mothers and their community. 

You will learn how to create recycled arts and crafts that make great gifts for friends and family! Create a "shemic" piece of art, free standing tree and ornament all out of recycled materials. Also see examples and learn tips on other recycled creations that you can make by recycling everyday household items. What is a shemic you ask? A shemic is a comic style, mixed media piece of art based on the thoughts, philosophies and attitudes of women.

Please note: All participants must bring the following: at least 2 cereal boxes for each person - or packaging similar in size, meat trays or egg cartons - works great for paint trays - 1 for each person, recycled papers - any scrap papers, recycle magazine papers with cool colors or patterns, cool packaging, old telephone books, newspapers, paint chips etc. Slots are limited so register soon!

Quang Ho, acclaimed Master Artist, teacher and author will be speaking about his life and the art process on Monday evening, November 9th , 7:00pm at Montgomery Bell Academy, Paschall Theatre.

Born in 1963, in Vietnam, he emigrated with his mother and 5 younger siblings to the United States in 1975 and is now a U.S. citizen. He presented his first solo show at age 16 at the prestigious Saks Gallery in Denver, Colorado. At 19, he became the guardian for his siblings when his mother was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Currently, he teaches at the Denver Art League. An avid scholar of philosophy and religion, he will present his thoughts on art and creativity in a fascinating discussion not to be missed. The lecture is open to the public and free of charge.

What lies beneath? Many of renowned artist John Kingerlee's paintings are built of layers and layers of paint applied with a palette knife or trowel. This repetitive process continues for months, sometimes years, leaving a history of the process in the painting. As the artist looks out his studio window, he sees the rugged and barren Beara landscape of Ireland as it reaches to the sea; low brush and outcroppings of rock lead to the Atlantic Ocean. The layers of paint he applies take on the contours of the landscape and his feelings about the space he occupies -- abstract, but rich with implied and applied color. Kingerlee also spends three months each year painting in Fez, Morocco, where he immerses himself in the urban environment, inspired by its graffiti and advertising, which pushes him in a different direction from the landscapes of his Irish home.

Kingerlee is a self-taught English artist who has been painting most of the seven decades of his life. This American tour of his paintings began two years ago, curated by the late New York critic William Zimmer. The Parthenon's East Gallery will exhibit thirty-nine paintings and collages. Senior Editor of Art in America Richard Vine will give a lecture titled John Kingerlee: By Art Alone on December 8 at 7:00pm as part of the 2009-2010 Parthenon Symposia Series. Mr. Vine states that "Kingerlee began making paintings, drawings, and collages in a typical Outsider style; yet, over time, he evolved, [eventually] creating works that converse with those of Malevich, Giacometti, Braque, Klee, Schwitters, Rothko, and Twombly." The African American Playwrights Exchange and gallery F @ Scarritt-Bennett Center will host a dramatic reading of the new play by Dr. Frank Dobson, executive director of Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, Young Messiahs Fly on Monday, Nov. 16.

This timely new play, written by Dr. Frank Dobson, novelist, playwright, poet, and executive director of Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, is a story about the rise and fall of a gifted young black athlete – another young black millionaire in the making – who faces tragedy from the aftermath of a chance encounter with the law. This thought-provoking play asks its audience to consider the realities of young black celebrity, money, fame, family ties and tragedy, in a story straight out of today’s headlines.

The play will be read by Rashad Rayford, Molly Breen, Roman Bryant, Scott Russell, and other actors, and will be directed by Shawn Whitsell, artistic director of The Destiny Theatre Experience. The artwork of Channing Bailey, a resident artist at gallery F and currently a senior at TSU, will be featured.

Simple Complexity: Complex Simplicity is an exhibition by sculptors James Rodger Alexander and John Douglas Powers in Space 204.

Powers draws inspiration from areas as diverse as natural history, architecture, and the history of technology. Vanderbilt's 2001 Margaret Stonewall Wooldridge Hamblet award recipient, he was recently recognized for his work in a New York Times article and is the recipient of the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant and a Southeast College Art Conference fellowship. He is an assistant professor of sculpture at the University of Alabama.

Trained as both an architect and a sculptor, Alexander's sculptural installations focus primarily on a single recurring issue: the resolution of the conflict between opposing forces. A Professor of Sculpture and Ceramics at the University of Alabama, he has curated exhibitions and published works on architectural terra cotta, vernacular architecture, political posters as propaganda and the conceptual relationship between architecture and sculpture. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious grants.

Mir Gallery invites you to the opening reception of Madonna et al. Madonna et al is a series of sculptures (part assemblage/part painting) created by the artistic team Brotherhood of the Harvest (B.O.T.H.) The focus of the exhibition is a group of sculptures representing stylized versions of a Madonna figure. Brotherhood of the Harvest has a part folk, all fun esthetic. 

Brotherhood of the Harvest is a collaborative sculpture/performance art duo made up of Steve “Uncle Stevo” Marrazzo and mikewindy (aka Mike Mitchell.) Collectively they are 90 years old, weigh in at 425 pounds and stand 11’ 11”tall. They have two wives, six children and two cats. B.O.T.H. has degrees from the University of Memphis and Hofstra. They live in Hastings and St. Augustine in the state of Florida. Their stated mission is to use any means at their disposal to provoke, entertain, challenge and amuse. They celebrate creation and the complicated act of being alive with clay, music, film, wood, found objects, screws, bolts and whatever comes their way.

SEXY BEASTS is a seductive and haunting exhibition of medium to large scale oil paintings saturated with symbolism, uneasiness, uncanny beauty and wit. The exhibition examines the ways in which we both digest and ignore imagery projected onto our collective cultural experience.

Hughes deconstructs popular icons and executes his paintings using references to art history and pop design. His images, pulledHughes- Psychic Armor from the internet, popular films and other media sources, are intentionally artificial, initially stirring up uneasiness, precipitating change and inspiring the viewer to engage in a dialogue that explores the experience of our temporary continuity.

Hughes' raw painterly hand and carefully chosen palettes and compositions are highly engaging and have captured the attention of collectors nationally. Following his completion of an MFA in paintingand drawing from the University of Georgia in 2006, Jeremy accepted appointment as Assistant Professor of Painting and Painting Coordinator at SUNY Oswego in New York. The artist has exhibited widely in the Southeast, and currently lives and works in Nashville, TN.

Artlightenment will feature the works of over 30 local artists, and some of the works will be available for purchase. To encourage youth, there will be two free children's art classes. The show is being done in conjunction with Ah Ha Art and the Full Circle Art, a collection of visual artists and musicians dedicated to developing and promoting artistic expression. Artlightenment is free and open to the public. Included in this inspiring weekend will be free workshops for all people in the creative arts. Internationally recognized and commercially successful Los Angeles Fine Artist, Pomm Hepner is coming to Nashville to deliver two free workshops, "Creating A Successful Art Career" and "Promoting Yourself As An Artist." These workshops will cover how to make a living as artist.

Tinney Contemporary is proud to announce Intimate Decade -- a diverse exploration of human contact from birth to death -- Photographs by David Teplica.

David Teplica has fused the two worlds of art and medicine. Whether manipulating human form in two dimensions photographically or changing anatomy in three dimensions surgically, he enjoys altering the way society sees the body. David Teplica is a photographer and plastic surgeon who lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He maintains two active professional careers that often commingle. After completing medical school at Dartmouth, Teplica trained in Plastic Surgery at the University of Chicago. During the same seven-year Residency period, he received the Trustee's Scholarship for the full course of study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and earned a Master of Fine Arts.

Today Teplica maintains a focused private practice in Chicago with patients from around the globe. He exhibits his creative work throughout the United States and Europe and lectures widely. As a member of the faculty, Teplica bases his teaching and research activities at the University of Chicago.

Renaissance Jack: The Work of Jack Stoddart – Hippies, Hill People & Other Southern Marvels, an exhibition of compelling photography and video images, created over several decades by nationally known Tennessee photographer Jack Stoddart marks the debut presentation of the Plateau Collection, a series of black-and-white, sepia-toned photographs recently acquired for the State Museum’s permanent collection, which represent the life of subsistence farmers, beginning with the decade of the 1970s.

Known as an “old-school” photographer, Stoddart uses archival silver gelatin prints, traditionally processed by the artist in his studio darkroom. Many of the exhibition images are custom-toned or hand- tinted by Stoddart. Stoddart, who moved his family to Middle Tennessee in 1972, captured a now-vanishing way of rural life in the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. A long-time resident of the area, he personally knew his subjects, and, in spite of the stereotypical views of the time, which depicted his community as impoverished and ignorant, Stoddart found beauty in the simplicity and strong work ethic of the residents’ everyday life. He was granted the rare opportunity to document the daily activities of the Muddy Pond Mennonite Community, where his family shopped at the co-operative grocery.

In 2006, the Stoddart clan began hosting an annual Americana music festival on the family farm, aptly entitled, Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s. In 2008, the music festival expanded into a series of Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s performances, featuring original singer-songwriters in the Americana, Bluegrass, Roots, Folk and Blues genres. The series is currently broadcast on PBS affiliate WCTE-TV in Middle Tennessee and in Nashville and 130 other PBS affiliates across the country. Sessions are recorded at two locations: the outdoor venue, 'Sundown Stage', on Stoddart’s Cumberland Plateau family farm and at the State Museum's Buffalo Bill Stage in downtown Nashville.

Visitors who attend the exhibition will be able to view previously taped performances from the televised Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s series. The public is invited to attend the free upcoming TV tapings and to visit the exhibit of Stoddart’s work during taping intermissions. On the evening of November 20, Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s will feature ASCAP Songwriter of the Year and Grammy-nominee Darrell Scott with musician Kenny Malone. Audience members attending the December 18 taping will hear the music of Grammy-winning, country/folk, multi-instrumentalist Tim O'Brien. Both performances begin at 6:00pm at the museum and are free and open to the public.

The exhibition continues through January 3, 2010 at the State Museum. The museum will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Adventure Science Center is opening its doors to the public to a new, interactive exhibit, "Wonders of the Universe", that examines the visible and the invisible, with a hands-on, interactive exhibit that includes multi-touch technology, gaming, imaging and other media.

Exhibit highlights include: Star Walk - an imaginary galaxy where you can experience brilliant stars in the darkness of space. - Cosmic Ray's - a unique multi-player space adventure computer game. Solar Projection Table - a five-foot-wide table projecting images of sunspots and solar flares. Infrared Wall - which converts your body's different temperatures into colors and projects them in real time. Spectrum Table - a one-of-its-kind, 100-inch multi-touch table that explores the electromagnetic spectrum by moving objects through different wavelengths from radio waves to gamma rays.

"Wonders of the Universe," a nearly $1 million exhibit gallery, completes the Science Center's $21.4 million sky and space project. The first phase opened in June 2008 with the launch of the new Sudekum Planetarium and the first floor of the Space Chase exhibit wing.

Southern Culture Lowbrow Extravaganza: “A night of Class, Elegance and Taste… Or not.” will feature nine Lowbrow visual artists. They will come together for a night of satire and celebration concerning Southern Culture. Artists will share their own unique and comedic visual interpretations and relationships with the South. Artists will display a variety of different media works from traditional paintings and photography to video, installation art, and graphic design. Topics of interest include: Southern Living, Classic Cars, Southern Slang, Food and those special things that make the South, The South. Live painting and collaborative works will also take place at the show.
