Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession, Sculpture from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation is a retrospective of the artist’s career and includes more than 60 bronzes, from small studies to monumental works, which were for the most part cast posthumously from original wax sculptures created by the artist. The works were chosen to convey major projects and themes from throughout Rodin’s career, from his earliest bust of his father, Jean-Baptiste Rodin, to his later studies of dancing figures. In addition to such highlights as cast versions of The Gates of Hell and The Burghers of Calais, the exhibition includes works on paper, photographs, portraits of the artist and an educational model that demonstrates the complexities of the lost-wax casting process, Rodin’s favored method of sculptural reproduction.

Organized by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.

Through her thought-provoking photographs, Moroccan-born artist Lalla Essaydi confronts the issues of confinement and repression experienced by many women in Islamic societies. The women depicted in her images, many of whom are family members dressed in traditional attire, are covered with calligraphic writing. These words break the expected silence, telling stories that speak of Essaydi’s thoughts and experiences, caught between the east and the west, the past and the present.

At the Abominable Art Show, approximately 100 established and emerging Nashville visual artists present you with artwork in a wide variety of mediums. The latest quarterly Untitled installment isn't just free to attend -- it's free to participate in! Untitled is showing Nashville area artists and humanoids its appreciation by waiving the winter show participation fee, already near mythical for being one of - if not the lowest - artist show fees in town. Extinction is unacceptable and the unconventional art group is determined to exist and thrive during abominable economic times.

Untitled is a legendary community of artists creating visual art events in locations outside of the traditional gallery scene.

Rivers and Spires Festival is a three day outdoor event in Historic Downtown Clarksville. It features a night of patriotic tribute to military heroes, five stages of entertainment, an International Streetfest, Kidz Zone, Jazz 'N Wine area, car shows, parades, and more. Last year, an estimated 30,000 enjoyed the music, great outdoors, food and people watching.

The festival started in 2003 as a tribute to the returning soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Since then, it has continued to follow this heritage, with special tributes for the many soldiers from nearby Fort Campbell deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rivers and Spires Festival is produced by the Clarksville-Montgomery County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Tennessee artist John Baeder is one of the best known of the American Photorealists. His popular paintings and prints of roadside diners so capture the pulse of America that his images have entered the secondary market as reproductions on posters, calendars, and postcards (here the energy comes full circle, as old postcards were an important source of inspiration for the paintings). The Walt Disney Co., Coca-Cola, and such fashion institutions as Perry Ellis, Liz Claiborne, and Guess have used them.

Brett Weaver roams the country, seeking out the wide-open spaces and distant landscapes that have balance and strength to his paintings. His frequent travels bring new experiences and opportunities and help to add freshness and variety to his paintings. Weaver, a Tennessee native, continues to pursue excellence in his work through a simple, honest and direct approach.

The Conte Community Arts Gallery will feature a selection of drawings, paintings, and photographs created by Tennessee students in Advanced Placement studio art programs. Such programs makes it possible for highly motivated high school students to engage in college-level art study. With the encouragement and guidance of committed AP instructors, these students produce works that challenge their own artistic perceptions and develop their intentions, both in concept and execution. This second bi-annual exhibition showcases a sampling of works that art students have created for their portfolios, which are designed to represent diversity of content, style, and technique.

Three years ago, Hurricane Katrina prepared to make landfall. As a fourth generation New Orleanian, William Rosen had been through many storms, so he and his wife packed overnight bags and prepared to leave the city for the duration of the hurricane. But as the world knows, this storm brought more than the usual disaster: the levees were breeched following the hurricane, flooding 80% of the city. Instead of returning in a few days to a house that had withstood the storm, Rosen and his daughter arrived a month later to document a ruin. On the third anniversary of this devastating natural and man-made disaster, the Parthenon examines Katrina through the eyes of one man representing the thousands who lost both little and all. A life-sized room construction, papered in Rosen's enlarged photos of the home's interior, helps visitors envision what was left after the water subsided. In some cases, an eerie beauty remains in these former living quarters.

Each year the students of The Renaissance Center have the opportunity to showcase their artwork for the pleasure of family, friends and the everyday occupants of the center. This occurs at multiple times throughout the year, but each time there is a different group of artists with different work, and sometimes even new classes. There is one group though that is near and dear to the hearts of so many in our community: the children. Our children's art classes at the center take up the majority of the art instruction, whether it is through private or class-based instruction.

The Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Jules de Balincourt, a retrospective exhibition of works by the renowned New York-based artist, curated by Joseph Whitt. The work of Jules de Balincourt straddles a difficult line between the raw necessity of folk art and an unexpected mastery of abstraction's compositional complexities. The French-born, California-raised artist was recently dubbed by Artforum International magazine as "one of the most challenging painters working today." Drawing from several important private collections, this exhibition will present an overview of de Balincourt's artistic practice from 2002 to today.

Lecture: Jules de Balincourt will present a lecture about his work, Wednesday, October 22 , 7:00pm in Room 103 of Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt campus.

Richter Gallery is pleased to bring this important artist and exhibition to Nashville. In his forward to Jazz, Giants and Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard, Quincy Jones, wrote, "When people think of jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman's." In addition to the internationally known Jazz photographs, this exhibit will also feature Herman Leonard's rarely seen fashion work and behind-the-scenes photographs of such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday. "I wanted to do with light what artists do with a line sketch, show the whole character," said Herman in an interview with Departures Magazine. And that is what Herman has done over his entire lifetime and continues to do at the age of 85. He elevated music photography into an art form. His use of lighting, atmosphere and a spirituality of sorts cannot be found elsewhere. Therefore it is only fitting that Herman will be presented with the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Portraiture in October of this year.

Exhibition Reception with the Artist: Saturday, November 8, 6:00pm-10:00pm in conjunction with Artrageous.

There will be a catered reception, speech-language-hearing screenings, the Cremona Strings Ensemble Too, Bizz and Crew, Comedians Leslie Nash and John Bowman, Visual Artists Michael McBride and Olga Alexeeva, and a Barry Scott theatrical production. This event is a black tie, formal affair. To help make the night a memorable one, a gift raffle including Nashville Symphony tickets; Nashville Predators authentic, autographed puck; Bridgestone Tires; and others will surely continue the holiday spirit.
