Travel back to 16th Century England at the 25th annual Tennessee Renaissance Festival. Our Village of Covington Glen comes alive with the bustle of a Renaissance Marketplace. Over 60 skilled Artisians from all over the country display their wares from silks to swords, gems to jewels. Flavors, aromas and tastes of specialty foods and drinks greet the festival-goer. Hear the sounds of Renaissance musicians and merrymakers as they echo through the trees. Color, movement, and peals of laughter welcome those who thrill to the challenges of Games of Skill and Man-Powered Rides.

Helpful Information: Tennessee Renaissance Festival is easily accessible from I-24, or I-65, or I-840. The festival is located off Highway 96, between Franklin and Murfreesboro. See map. Parking at the festival is Free!

Pitch, volume, tempo, texture, staccato, legato, and the strategic use of silence: These are all elements of music, right? Is combining them in different ways also a key to unlocking characters onstage, making each of your roles different from each other, thereby extending your range as an actor? You betcha! In this workshop, we’ll work with individual elements of voice, exploring your range and facility, and use your imagination to breathe new life into your next audition piece or role. We will start working with a delightful piece called The Stinky Cheese Man and then work on a piece of your own—bring a one to two-minute piece of dialogue or monologue. Start breathing before you come!

In order to take away some of the mystery from the audition process, this workshop brings together the Artistic Directors from four of Nashville’s professional theatres—People’s Branch Theatre, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre, and Nashville Shakespeare Festival to provide participants with a glimpse into the process. Participants will present a three-minute audition consisting of two contrasting monologues and receive immediate feedback from these directors—thoughts on the monologue choice; ideas for the actor on how to be considered for callbacks and casting; in general, what the directors look for in open call auditions. In addition to hearing other participants’ audition feedback, there will be a half-hour break midway through the master class to provide an opportunity for more informal discussion and networking.

The Alex LeVasseur Memorial Scholarship Program presents Jeffrey Steele and Friends, an intimate evening with Jeffrey Steele and various music artists at Rocketown. Artists slated to perform live with Jeffrey Steele and his band will be announced closer to the event date. Follow on Twitter for artist and event updates.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Alex LeVasseur Memorial Scholarship Program, which helps over-looked and underprivileged youth in Nashville by motivating them in school and in life, and Rocketown which provides a safe, alcohol and drug free environment for youth to enjoy concerts, classes, videogames and skateboarding.

Jeffrey Steele and family created the Alex LeVasseur Memorial Scholarship Program at The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, in conjunction with Rocketown/Sixth Avenue Skate Park in Nashville, after Steele’s 13-year-old son passed away January 28, 2007 in a tragic accident. Steele and his family are very involved with this program, which has already made a significant impact on its participants.

This intimate event will include table seating, with a limited VIP section. VIP tables are $1500; remaining tables are $1000; limited single seats are available for $100 each. Wine and hors‘d oeuvres will be served. The event will also feature live and silent auctions.

This is the first of two events the LeVasseur family puts on each year in memory of Alex. The second is an outdoor skate and music festival, which is scheduled for June 2010.

ReLeafing Day evolved out of Nashville Tree Foundation's highly successful, award-winning ReLeaf Nashville project that planted 6,757 shade trees from 1998 to 2001 to replace some of the 20,000 felled by tornadoes on April 16, 1998.

Tired of always watching? Come out for a day of flag football and take this opportunity to actually play! These pick up games are open to members and non-members of all ages. Come with friends or come alone, and bring a ball if it brings you good luck.

Here's the game plan. Teams are formed when there are enough individuals for a game. If you come late, no problem. You can take someone's spot on the field when they come off for a break. When the first game is over, teams break up and form new teams. All ability levels welcome. Wear dirty clothes! This event is canceled with rain or snow. Be sure to dress warm and comfortable. And hey, you're welcome even if you just want to watch. Spectators may bring a picnic, hot cocoa, and blankets to cheer on your favorite Team, Team Green!

The 21st Annual Nashville Lawn and Garden Show will celebrate the beauty created when natural artistry and manmade artistry are combined in gardens. Staged to the theme, Artistic by Nature, the 2010 show promises to offer inspiration, ideas and information for gardeners and garden lovers. The Nashville Lawn and Garden Show is Tennessee’s premier horticultural event and one of the largest gardening shows in the South. The 2010 Nashville Lawn and Garden Show has been named a Top 20 Event for winter 2010 by the South East Tourism Society of the USA. Produced by the Horticultural Association of Tennessee, the annual event is staged at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.

Centerpiece of the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show is always a naturalized presentation of more than 20 outstanding live gardens created by professional landscape designers. In addition to thousands of flowers and plants, most of the gardens include water features, ranging from small fountains to large waterfalls, and elaborate structures such as rock walls, terraces, pergolas and gazebos. A series of 20 free lectures is presented throughout the four-day show by expert horticulturists and garden designers. The show also includes 250 exhibit booths of horticultural products, services, and equipment for show and sale; in 2009, vendors from 12 states participated in the event. The show’s spectacular floral design gallery features the work of more than 25 of the best designers in the mid-south region. The show annually attracts more than 22,000 paid attendees, plus several thousand additional people who are exhibitors, speakers and volunteers.

Simple Complexity: Complex Simplicity is an exhibition by sculptors James Rodger Alexander and John Douglas Powers in Space 204.

Powers draws inspiration from areas as diverse as natural history, architecture, and the history of technology. Vanderbilt's 2001 Margaret Stonewall Wooldridge Hamblet award recipient, he was recently recognized for his work in a New York Times article and is the recipient of the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant and a Southeast College Art Conference fellowship. He is an assistant professor of sculpture at the University of Alabama.

Trained as both an architect and a sculptor, Alexander's sculptural installations focus primarily on a single recurring issue: the resolution of the conflict between opposing forces. A Professor of Sculpture and Ceramics at the University of Alabama, he has curated exhibitions and published works on architectural terra cotta, vernacular architecture, political posters as propaganda and the conceptual relationship between architecture and sculpture. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious grants.

Opening Reception: Thursday, November 12, 4:00pm-6:00pm. Alexander will discuss his sculptural installation and photography at 5:00pm during the reception.

Space 204 is sponsored by the Department of Art and is located on the second floor of the E. Bronson Ingram Studio Art Center, 25th and Garland, on the Vanderbilt campus.

"God on Trial," inspired by the legend that concentration camp prisoners conducted a mock trial against the Almighty, will be shown at Congregation Micah at 11:30am on Saturday, November 21. The event is free and open to the public.

"God on Trial" is a 2008 BBC/WGBH Boston television play set in Auschwitz, where Jewish prisoners from all walks of life try God on grounds that the Ruler of the Universe has broken his covenant with the Jews by allowing the Nazis to commit genocide. "This screenplay speaks to universal questions about faith and philosophy," said Rick Wise, Chair of Micah's Lifelong Learning Committee, which is sponsoring the Brown Bag lunch event.

Following the screening, a discussion will focus on such questions as: Why is there so much suffering in the world? What kind of God would allow the Holocaust to happen? How do you interpret the film's conclusion?

A Reform Jewish synagogue known for its diversity and inclusiveness, Congregation Micah serves nearly 500 member families under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Laurie Rice and Rabbi Philip (Flip) Rice.

Christmas is always such a busy time, between shopping, decorating, spending time with friends, and traveling - there is just so much to do and so little time! Mike & Kelly Hollis know this feeling all too well, especially this year as they try to add more and more activities to an already packed schedule! When it seems like the church Christmas program, Christmas parties and getting three kids from place to place couldn't be enough, an accident forces Kelly to stop dead in her tracks, but will it be enough to help her understand the real meaning of the season? The night will be filled with exciting new songs, familiar carols and a funny, but poignant, heart-warming story. Come as Kelly searches and maybe you too can find One Quiet Night.

Join a community sing-in of the best-loved choruses from Handel's Messiah, along with the Music City Baroque as they kick off the holiday season. Music City Baroque (formerly Belle Meade Baroque) is a professional baroque orchestra using authentic period instruments, directed by Murray Somerville. To start the evening the orchestra, led by guest concertmaster Stephen Redfield, plays the last great Concerto Grosso of Handel, celebrating the 250th anniversary of his death; and the Music City Baroque Chamber Chorus joins the players for Bach's festive "Magnificat" in D, with guest trumpet soloist Brian Shaw. After intermission, the audience will join in singing their favorite Messiah choruses. Amateur and professional singers, choir members, folks who just like to sing in the shower and all who enjoy listening to fine music are invited. This is a splendid way to start the holiday season! (And for tenors there's a special bonus. You'll be singing the Hallelujah chorus at proper baroque pitch. It will make all those high notes seem so much easier; you'll feel like Pavarotti all over again!)

Gallery One is pleased to announce an exciting all media exhibition based on the theme -- A River. The benefit art show will lend support to the Harpeth River Watershed Association (HRWA), a non-profit organization devoted to the protection and stewardship of the Harpeth River. The juried art show features a wide variety of original representational and interpretative art developed by artists representing the gallery, including Rebecca Ruegger, Henry Isaacs, Patrick Adams, Deborah Fritts, and Lendon Noe, as well as new works by several artists new to the gallery. A portion of the proceeds from the benefit will be donated to the HRWA.

The call to artists expressly identified an excerpt from the novel, A River Runs Through It, and other stories, by Norman Maclean, as a source of inspiration for submitted works: "Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters." The exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday, December 3rd from 5:00pm until 8:00pm and will continue through Saturday, January 16th.

Lipscomb University's Theater Department presents Wolf Calls and Pig Tales, a re-telling of the Three Little Pigs nursery rhyme, Dec. 1-3, in Collins Alumni Auditorium on the Lipscomb campus. Wolf Calls and Pig Tales features a smorgasbord of animal costumes, non-stop action, and clever musical bits that illustrate there are two sides to every story. This 45-minute adaption was written by Lipscomb sophomore Rebecca Bennie and Lipscomb instructor Deb Holloway. After the Dec. 1 show, families can head over to the Allen Arena mall where Lighting of the Green offers free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, and a free outdoor holiday concert featuring Amy Grant, former Gaither Vocal Band member Guy Penrod and other local musical guests.
