Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and acclaimed presidential historian, will host a free public lecture at the downtown branch of the Nashville Public Library. Goodwin, who has authored books such as No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir, has written numerous articles on politics and baseball for leading national publications. She also appears frequently on NBS, MSNBC and Meet the Press as a presidential historian and political news analyst and has recently appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. A passionate baseball fan, Goodwin also had the esteemed honor of being the first female journalist allowed in the Boston Red Sox locker room.

Among her many award-winning publications, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln was winner of the prestigious Lincoln Prize, winner of the inaugural Book Prize for American History, a 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist and a New York Times bestseller. “A brilliantly conceived and well-written tour de force of a historical narrative,” wrote the reviewer for the Boston Globe. Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to the book and is developing a feature film based on it, with Liam Neeson to star as Lincoln.

The T.J. Martell Foundation is presenting the annual Dunkin’ Donuts Family Fun Run and Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, November 7 at Centennial Park in Nashville, Tenn. It's hosted by Eddie and Taj George and Family. The event will give families the opportunity to participate in fitness related activities (running or walking) followed by a picnic lunch with activities for everyone, such as musical performances by pureNRG, Madison Cain and Luke Benward, and activities for the children such as face painting, games and prizes and autograph sessions.

The T.J. Martell Foundation is a national non-profit organization that supports innovative research for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research through eight top research hospitals in the United States. In Nashville, the Foundation annually supports cancer research through the Frances Williams Preston Laboratories at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Eric Stokes' 1980 Spring Song, composed on a commission from New Music America, combines musical genius with childlike curiosity. Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the American Diabetes Association's 2 mile fundraising walk. With strong support from the business community including sponsorship and corporate teams, this event raises over $20 million to find a cure for diabetes and to support our mission. In order to take away some of the mystery from the audition process, this workshop brings together the Artistic Directors from four of Nashville’s professional theatres—People’s Branch Theatre, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre, and Nashville Shakespeare Festival to provide participants with a glimpse into the process. The Alex LeVasseur Memorial Scholarship Program presents Jeffrey Steele and Friends, an intimate evening with Jeffrey Steele and various music artists at Rocketown. All proceeds from the event benefit the Alex LeVasseur Memorial Scholarship Program, which helps over-looked and underprivileged youth in Nashville by motivating them in school and in life, and Rocketown which provides a safe, alcohol and drug free environment for youth to enjoy concerts, classes, videogames and skateboarding.

Jeffrey Steele and family created the Alex LeVasseur Memorial Scholarship Program at The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, in conjunction with Rocketown/Sixth Avenue Skate Park in Nashville, after Steele’s 13-year-old son passed away January 28, 2007 in a tragic accident. Steele and his family are very involved with this program, which has already made a significant impact on its participants.

This intimate event will include table seating, with a limited VIP section. VIP tables are $1500; remaining tables are $1000; limited single seats are available for $100 each. Wine and hors‘d oeuvres will be served. The event will also feature live and silent auctions.

This is the first of two events the LeVasseur family puts on each year in memory of Alex. The second is an outdoor skate and music festival, which is scheduled for June 2010.

Fresh paintings inspired by Grecian surroundings. Many of these works were completed en plein air (out doors, on location) during a September trip to Athens and Santorini. Hooper's work transforms her experience in colors, shapes, and lines. The conclusion is sometimes abstract, sometimes representation, but always her true expression through the chosen medium. Her Greek heritage adds authenticity and flavor to our exhibition.

Putnam's contemporary impressionist style is abstract, fresh, and expressive, yet a true representation of place and time. As published in "American Art Collector" magazine, the work 'invites the viewer to enter the scene, smell the air, and feel the relentless heat of the sun.'

ReLeafing Nashville Day is the Nashville Tree Foundation's fall planting, held every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Volunteers across the county plant trees in public spaces and private yards. In partnership with Nashville Electric Service, the Tree Foundation has planted hundreds of trees since ReLeafing Day began in 2002. ReLeafing Day evolved out of Nashville Tree Foundation's highly successful, award-winning ReLeaf Nashville project that planted 6,757 shade trees from 1998 to 2001 to replace some of the 20,000 felled by tornadoes on April 16, 1998.

M.E.A.T. by Joshua Black Wilkins is a photographic exhibit using the traditional medium of tintypes or ferrotypes. They are portraits shot on 4x5 metal plates which have been prepared and developed by hand in a darkroom. Very little has changed in 150 years regarding the process of making tintypes, though the subjects in this exhibit may not seem "vintage" or "timeless." M.E.A.T. is a series of female portraits where the notion of the female human body as a piece of meat is exaggerated by the use of a rubber pig head.

Jerome Epstein's Refuse of Man also bends stereotypes by creating a dialogue between waste and treasure; objects of disregard and objects of art. Epstein's work involves a multitude of mediums and techniques. Each sculpture is meticulously crafted, with hours poured into repurposing everyday discarded items.

Opening Reception: Sunday, October 18, 6:00pm-10:00pm will celebrate the harvest season with music, food and pumpkin carving. This event is open to all in the community 18 or older. *Bring a pumpkin to the opening for a carving contest.*

The 21st Annual Nashville Lawn and Garden Show will celebrate the beauty created when natural artistry and manmade artistry are combined in gardens. Staged to the theme, Artistic by Nature, the 2010 show promises to offer inspiration, ideas and information for gardeners and garden lovers. The Nashville Lawn and Garden Show is Tennessee’s premier horticultural event and one of the largest gardening shows in the South. The 2010 Nashville Lawn and Garden Show has been named a Top 20 Event for winter 2010 by the South East Tourism Society of the USA. Produced by the Horticultural Association of Tennessee, the annual event is staged at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.

Centerpiece of the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show is always a naturalized presentation of more than 20 outstanding live gardens created by professional landscape designers. In addition to thousands of flowers and plants, most of the gardens include water features, ranging from small fountains to large waterfalls, and elaborate structures such as rock walls, terraces, pergolas and gazebos. A series of 20 free lectures is presented throughout the four-day show by expert horticulturists and garden designers. The show also includes 250 exhibit booths of horticultural products, services, and equipment for show and sale; in 2009, vendors from 12 states participated in the event. The show’s spectacular floral design gallery features the work of more than 25 of the best designers in the mid-south region. The show annually attracts more than 22,000 paid attendees, plus several thousand additional people who are exhibitors, speakers and volunteers.

Simple Complexity: Complex Simplicity is an exhibition by sculptors James Rodger Alexander and John Douglas Powers in Space 204.

Powers draws inspiration from areas as diverse as natural history, architecture, and the history of technology. Vanderbilt's 2001 Margaret Stonewall Wooldridge Hamblet award recipient, he was recently recognized for his work in a New York Times article and is the recipient of the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant and a Southeast College Art Conference fellowship. He is an assistant professor of sculpture at the University of Alabama.

Trained as both an architect and a sculptor, Alexander's sculptural installations focus primarily on a single recurring issue: the resolution of the conflict between opposing forces. A Professor of Sculpture and Ceramics at the University of Alabama, he has curated exhibitions and published works on architectural terra cotta, vernacular architecture, political posters as propaganda and the conceptual relationship between architecture and sculpture. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious grants.

Opening Reception: Thursday, November 12, 4:00pm-6:00pm. Alexander will discuss his sculptural installation and photography at 5:00pm during the reception.

Space 204 is sponsored by the Department of Art and is located on the second floor of the E. Bronson Ingram Studio Art Center, 25th and Garland, on the Vanderbilt campus.

Adventure Science Center is opening its doors to the public to a new, interactive exhibit, "Wonders of the Universe", that examines the visible and the invisible, with a hands-on, interactive exhibit that includes multi-touch technology, gaming, imaging and other media.

Exhibit highlights include: Star Walk - an imaginary galaxy where you can experience brilliant stars in the darkness of space. - Cosmic Ray's - a unique multi-player space adventure computer game. Solar Projection Table - a five-foot-wide table projecting images of sunspots and solar flares. Infrared Wall - which converts your body's different temperatures into colors and projects them in real time. Spectrum Table - a one-of-its-kind, 100-inch multi-touch table that explores the electromagnetic spectrum by moving objects through different wavelengths from radio waves to gamma rays.

"Wonders of the Universe," a nearly $1 million exhibit gallery, completes the Science Center's $21.4 million sky and space project. The first phase opened in June 2008 with the launch of the new Sudekum Planetarium and the first floor of the Space Chase exhibit wing.
