The Hermitage: Frontier Farm to American Landmark looks at how this 1,000-acre property evolved from a modest frontier farm to Andrew Jackson's prosperous and expansive cotton plantation. The exhibit also illustrates how after Jackson's death, The Hermitage became an American Landmark while simultaneously deteriorating due to the Jackson family's downward financial situation.

The Hermitage story is not just about Andrew Jackson and his family. In fact, the Jackson family story cannot be told without the stories of the 150 enslaved Africans who lived and worked at The Hermitage. Whether house slave, skilled craftsmen, or field hand, each and every one made an important contribution to The Hermitage. From 1804 to 1865, slaves were born, purchased, lived, sold, and died on The Hermitage, but little is known about their story. Only recently through scant documents, archaeology, and oral tradition has an image of the Hermitage slave community begun to emerge.

The Hermitage, Home of President Andrew Jackson is proud to present Stories from the Hermitage Slave Community. Funds provided by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority helped make this exhibit possible.

Only a small number of photographs of Hermitage slaves are known to exist. This temporary exhibit gives voice to the Hermitage Slave Community by combining images of the slaves weathered and worn hands and faces with personal information about them. These stories and images reflect the struggle and contributions of individuals and families who supported the Hermitage plantation and the Jackson family.

Stories from the Hermitage Slave Community runs indefinitely. Stories from the Hermitage Slave Community is included with regular admission to The Hermitage.

Prehistoric Indian cultures existed in Tennessee through four evolving periods, beginning about 15,000 years ago, peaking between 800 and 1650 A.D. with the Mississippian people, and ending with the ascendancy of such modern tribes as the Cherokee and Chickasaw.

Artifacts from the Paleolithic, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods are on exhibit. The museum even has a display of bones from a mastodon that roamed Tennessee 10,000 years ago.

Spanish conquistadors were the first Europeans to reach Tennessee, followed by the French and English explorers, and then by the first white settlers. Armor and weapons from the Europeans and Daniel Boone's musket highlight this era.

A frontier cabin, 200-year-old dugout canoe, a grist mill, and a Conestoga wagon all give testimony to life on the frontier. Handmade furniture, a woodworking shop, and a working printing press show the skill of early Tennessee craftspeople.

The Antebellum period of 1840 to 1860 was a time of prosperity and cultural development for many Tennesseans. (Antebellum is from the Latin words ante, before, and bellum, war. It is used to signify the period before the Civil War.)

Cities and towns became trade centers, as railroads and steamboats drew people closer together. The increasing prosperity manifested itself in several ways. Artists, whether trained or self-taught, found a ready market for their skills as the rising middle and upper classes sought to have their portraits painted. Silversmiths, gunsmiths, tailors, and other craftsmen established themselves in cities and towns. Exhibits of Tennessee-made silver, firearms, and quilts attest to that prosperity.

Another display on African American life points out that one-fourth of Tennessee's population were blacks who not only did not share in the state's prosperity but also lived as slaves unable to control their own lives.

By 1860 the issue of slavery had become a tinderbox; a moral, social and economic issue which slowly divided the northern and southern states. Tennessee found itself divided when the General Assembly voted to secede. Many people in East Tennessee supported the Union and even fought in the Union Army.

Tennessee was the primary battlefield of the Civil War in the west, with more than 400 battles and skirmishes within its borders. Each of the major battles in Tennessee is highlighted with artifacts from the battlefield. The Tennessee State Museum's holdings of uniforms, battle flags and weapons are among the best in the nation.

Between 1870 and the 1920's, Tennessee experienced great changes fueled by the post-Civil War industrial revolution. Exhibits on women's suffrage, Prohibition, and the Tennessee Centennial Exposition illustrate the state's involvement in social issues of the times.

The Thompson family of Glen Leven and the Overton family of Travellers Rest lived as neighbors while experiencing the growth of Nashville into a major economic center during the nineteenth century. An important Civil War site, Glen Leven served as a Union Army hospital during the 1864 Battle for Nashville. Get an insider's view of the house and nearly 65 acres of undeveloped land through photographs and stories.

event Type

tn_history

The 2007 Belmont-Hillsboro Neighborhood, Inc. 11th consecutive Home Tour will be featuring 11 distinctive homes and 100 years of history.

Homes opening their doors for the home tour represent some of the best of the historic and most unique of the new.

1208 Clayton Avenue:
Although it is a contemporary design, dark colors and a small-scale facade help this home to blend in nicely with the traditional homes along this street. The mixture of materials, the projecting levels, and the varied arrangement of large and small casement windows create visual interest. Curved parapets and tall accent walls disguise the angles of the roof.

1300 Clayton Avenue:
A contemporary design, this side-gabled home features a prominent front wing with large windows and a brick chimney. The multi-planed roof has wide overhanging eaves. A gabled dormer with a large casement window is located on the top story. Paired columns support the front porch.

1302 Clayton Avenue:
This home was built around 1925. It has a side-gabled roof and features Craftsman details in the front door and sidelights. The eight-over-one lights, clearly visible in the paired windows on either side of the entryway, are also typical of the Craftsman style. Although the portico does not feature traditional Craftsman elements, the open base of the pediment helps it to blend in nicely with the remainder of the home.

1802 Primrose Avenue:
This newly built home creatively re-used many of the elements of the 1958 infill duplex, which once stood on the site. Bricks from the original structure were recycled for the foundation and the chimney of the new structure. The new home features a traditional gabled form, which keeps with the surrounding neighborhood architecture; yet the large, multi-light windows and large masonry chimney fronting the street help to distinguish it as a twenty-first century design.

1715 Cedar Lane:
Built around 1912, this home combines Craftsman elements and Tudor Revival characteristics. Craftsman details are evident in the porch where brick columns support a low-pitched roof with exposed rafter tails. The home's roof also features wide, overhanging eaves and exposed rafter tails. The stucco exterior with decorative half-timbering details in the gables and second-story projections are typical of Tudor Revival. Bargeboards are found around the gables and the dormers. Windows in the home are primarily arranged into bands of three or four and include double-hung sash windows and casement windows. Some windows feature diamond panes.

1706 Cedar Lane:
The hipped roof of this c.1915 brick bungalow has tiles along the ridge and a decorative ridge crest at each hip and the end of each gable. Four-over-one windows are arranged in pairs on the front wing and porch and in a band of four in the center. The window in the gabled dormer has three parts with four lights in each. The roof also features exposed rafter tails and knee braces below the eaves. The diamond-shaped windows in the gable of the front wing and the front porch add visual interest to the home.

2218 Belmont Blvd, Loft 102:
As part of a recent addition to 2218 Belmont Blvd, these lofts replaced the 1960s era eight-unit apartment building previously attached to the main house. Constructed of brick with concrete details, this loft features large corner windows. A copper shed roof supported by curved knee braces covers the entry.

1805 Linden Avenue:
This stucco home was constructed around 1920. The hipped roof intersects with gables, flat dormers, and a large chimney. Hood molding covers the entry. Skylights supplement the light provided to the home through the large multi-paned windows found along the facade.

1903 Linden Avenue:
This 1920s American Four-Square has a hipped roof with ridge tiles and hip knobs. Notice how the gabled roof over the front entry uses the same ridge tiles and includes a large ridge cap at the end. Wide overhanging eaves are found around the home. One-over-one double-hung sash windows are arranged in pairs on either side of the main entry. Battered piers support the side porch.

2015 Linden Avenue:
Built around 1920, this side-gabled bungalow features a prominent gabled dormer. Typical Craftsman-style knee braces are visible on the side gables and dormer. Additionally, exposed rafter tails are found on the dormer. Three-over-one windows, along with the multi-lighted door and sidelights, bring light into the home. Square pillars support the expansive front brick porch. The mixture of materials provides a variety of textures and colors to the home.

2005 Beechwood:
This newly constructed house is from the plan book of Lynn Taylor of Taylor Made Plans, LLC, which specializes in revitalizing urban neighborhoods through residential remodeling, historic design and new home plans. The home is a craftsman bungalow, which accommodates the modern needs of today's homeowners within a historically appropriate facade. The home has an open floor plan with a neighbor-friendly front porch and a screened-in back porch with a fireplace.

event Type

festivals

There is no better way to spend a beautiful October day than at the Annual Oktoberfest Celebration in Historic Germantown. This colorful, autumn festival will again entertain, regale, and delight thousands from Middle Tennessee with its unique brand of traditional German revelry.

The day will begin with the Paulaner Bier 5 K Oktoberfest Run/Walk at 8:00am. At 9:30am the two historic sponsoring churches will conduct community wide worship services. From 10:30am until 7:00pm, the Oktoberfest Street Festival kicks off with fun, food, fellowship, and entertainment. This year's event will feature music by Die Musik Meisters, Music City Swing, Ted Guillaum (Organ Grinder), Nashville Jazz Workshop, Steff Mahan Band, and Block Family Band.

For more than a quarter century, this original, city wide celebration has been offering authentic German food, crafts, tours, dance, and entertainment. Established in 1980, this festival is one of the few nationwide that can claim an authentic German neighborhood as a venue. Oktoberfest showcases the best of this Germantown neighborhood - it's past history, present revitalization, and expanding future growth and diversity.

Helpful Information: The Oktoberfest Festival is held in Nashville's Historic Germantown. The event is located within a six-block area between the Tennessee Bicentennial Mall/Farmer's Market and Taylor Street, and between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue North. The two historic churches are on Seventh Avenue North and Monroe Street where the hub of the activities will occur.

There is plenty of free parking available beside the festival site and at the Farmer's Market.

Mort Kunstler, America's premier historical artist, will appear at the annual Tennessee Civil War Show at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. This is the largest Civil War show in the United States filling five buildings at the fairgrounds with Civil War era relics, art, books, and many other items of interest.

Mr. Kunstler will be the guest of Heritage Classic Art and will be signing prints at their booth. A special signed and numbered limited edition print has been painted especially for this show. This print is entitled "Order Out of Chaos" and depicts Nathan Bedford Forrest in Nashville just prior to it's capture by Union forces. Nashville was extremely important during the Civil War as a manufacturing center and supply depot for the Confederacy. You may view "Order Out of Chaos" as well as many other Kunstler creations at www.heritageclassicart.com.

The story of Jewish immigration to Tennessee and how they embraced the culture they found here is documented in a new exhibit at the Tennessee State Museum. Bagels & Barbeque: The Jewish Experience in Tennessee begins with the saga of early Jewish settlers emigrating from Europe and continues through the Civil War and Reconstruction, World War II, the Civil Rights Era and up to the recent influence of the Jewish Community in Tennessee.

The exhibition is a joint project of the Tennessee State Museum in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, Jewish Community Federation of Greater Chattanooga, Knoxville Jewish Alliance, and Memphis Jewish Federation, with the participation of other Jewish communities around the state. The exhibit's statewide tour is supported in part by a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
