Completed in 1853 by Adelicia Acklen, the Belmont Mansion was recognized as one of the most elaborate and unusual homes in the South. Adelicia secretly conspired with both the Confederate and Union forces to emerge from the Civil War with her fortune intact. The Grand Salon with its staircase is considered the most elaborate domestic room built in antebellum Tennessee. This historic site, located on the Belmont University Campus, offers personally-guided, hour-long tours of 16 rooms in the opulent mansion. A guided walk through the Belmont Mansion, a magnificent antebellum home, becomes a journey into American aristocracy. This enormous estate home, is furnished with period pieces, gilded mirrors, paintings, and marble statues. As you will see the lifestyle of a bygone era, you'll hear Adelicia's fascinating story as Nashville's own steel magnolia. Her strength and perseverance prevailed through the Civil War, three marriages, ten children, and the management of one of the largest fortunes in America.
