    The Case Against 8
    Thursday, April 17, 2014 6:00pm

A behind-the-scenes look inside the historic case to overturn Proposition 8, California's 2008 ban on same-sex marriage. The high-profile trial first makes headlines with the unlikely pairing of Ted Olson and David Boies, political foes who last faced off as opposing attorneys in Bush v. Gore and joined forces for the first time to fight for equal rights for gays and lesbians. The film also follows the plaintiffs, two gay couples thrust into the national spotlight as spokespeople for the cause: Kris Perry & Sandy Stier, lesbian mothers of four boys in Berkeley, and Jeff Zarrillo & Paul Katami in Los Angeles, who have been together for over a decade. The film tells the powerful story of the plaintiffs and their families as they find themselves at the center of starkly divided national attention. The audience will witness the growth of the case from an idea to a national headline, and similarly the key players’ journeys from obscurity to household names. Five years in the making, The Case Against 8 is the inside story of the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the people who led the charge.

    I Lay Where I Fall
    Friday, April 18, 2014 9:30pm

A self-taught guitar player, bass player, piano player, drummer, and singer, Juston Stens felt artistically limited as the drummer of Dr. Dog, so he walked away from the band. Now on his own, Juston travels America on a 1972 Triumph motorcycle with a laptop full of demos to collaborate with multiple artists on recording his songs in their personal spaces. Some studios are professionally built from top to bottom, while others are simply microphones in living rooms. Some musicians welcome Juston with open arms, while others have a hard time grasping what he is asking them for. At times, the stresses of the road certainly wear Juston down, but these trials only bring him closer to himself. The output of these collaborations is as diverse as the musicians themselves, a group that includes members of Wilco, Spoon, Generationals, Floating Action, Brass B ed, Apollo Sunshine, and solo artists such as David Vandervelde, Jessica Lea Mayfield, among others.
