A weekend class at The Frist Center For the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN with Dawn Whitelaw set her on a life-changing path of artistic endeavor. Though she has studied with several notable artists, Cathleen attributes the "informal" learning opportunities out in the field as the most valuable. "Nothing compares to those moments in casual conversation, quiet observation, and gentle critique that have had an impact on my work. I truly value those special interactions and memories." Cathleen paints in plein air (french for "out of doors") as well as in her studio in Historic Tanglewood in Nashville, TN. She enjoys traveling to new and challenging locales to paint. "Leaving the comfort zone of my surroundings is so very challenging. There's a certain kind of fascination and determination to effectively interpret new scenery and topography." In 2012, Cathleen served as President of The Chestnut Group, an artist group based in Nashville, TN , consisting of approximately 170 artist members. The mission of the organization is to partner with organizations who share a vision of preservation of land and historic locations within middle Tennessee. Through the sales of paintings, funds are raised to support the work of organizations such as Radnor Lake, Battle of Franklin Trust/Carnton Plantation, The Land Trust of Tennessee, Warner Parks, & The Duck River Watershed. Cathleen is a native of Amarillo, TX and has resided in Nashville since 1991.
