Anthony Thornton

Anthony Thorton has been making Afrocentric acrylic based canvas artwork for over 26 years. He is a lover of Ernie Barns and unnamed local Nashville graffiti artist. Their moving works brought life to an otherwise dreary scene in the city. In his personal work, he is inspired by the idea of people seeing themselves in dignified historical or social settings that may spur them to believe that they too can rise to the occasion.

Artwork throughout the time has served a purpose to enlighten but give meaning to the living beyond surviving. He strives to bring that level of functionality of artwork to the 21st century. His elders at Tennessee State University which an HBC in Nashville, TN taught him about the use of Afrocentric and traditional worldly symbols to project a certain feel for an object. Along with this, they taught him to have the ability to create objects to perform certain meanings in life such as…enlightenment, history, self-identification, love, and many other things.
