Garland Fulghum

Garland Fulghum is a primarily self taught impressionist painter and portraitist whose studio is near Nashville, Tennessee. Raised in Southern California and Hawaii, he grew up amid the simple elegance of Spanish architecture and tall palms, always close to the ocean and the scent of saltwater. Museum visits and old Spanish Churches were a constant entertainment and source of awe. To stand where people of centuries past had stood always gave a sense of connection, wonder and mystery which fired the imagination on many levels. The visits to libraries and an occasional art gallery filled in gaps and a wall full of portraits offered insight and questions in a rich vein-This person was on the other side of this canvas…who was painting? To draw, to give a dimensional illusion on a flat piece of paper had a particular appeal and has always been practiced on a regular basis. Learning to see subtle value shifts in those early lessons are still a part of the work today. But as Monet said, “Colour is my day-long obsession…”. Garland’s work is presently available in Nashville thru his studio or Midtown Gallery.
