What’s so special about this recipe?
This recipe combines a Southern traditional recipe and healthy living into one! Not only will you feel good about eating it, you’ll enjoy every last bite!
What are the best bananas to use?
The best bananas to use are really ripe bananas with a few black spots on them. The peel should be pretty spotted, but the banana itself shouldn’t have brown spots when you peel it.
You definitely do not want to use green or unripe bananas for this recipe.

What can you add to this chocolate chip oatmeal banana bread?
As you can tell, we like our add-on’s! You could always skip the chocolate chips or add-in something else though.
A few ideas to add into your recipe are:
- 3/4 cup walnuts (add them when you add in the oats)
- 3/4 cup shredded coconut (also, add this in with the oats)
- 1/2-3/4 cup dried fruit like raisins or dried cherries or cranberries would also work! If you’ll toss them in flour before adding them – they’ll stay better in the bread too!
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, cinnamon, or pumpkin spice to boost the spice flavor
How should you store the bread?
You can leave the bread sitting out on the counter in an airtight container up to 3 days. You can also store it in the fridge for up to a week!
If you want to eat it warm, we like to microwave a slice for about 10 seconds.
Can I freeze this bread?
Yes! You can freeze our Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Banana Bread!
You’d just want to slice the bread first and then wrap each slice in plastic wrap then aluminum foil to keep it fresh. It’ll freeze for up to 3 months!
When you’re ready to enjoy it, just unwrap and let thaw overnight. Then you can microwave it 10 seconds to heat it up again.
Tips for Making Your Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Banana Bread with Greek Yogurt
- You want to use ripe bananas. They’re going to taste sweeter, and they’ll be easier to mash.
- You can use quick oats or old fashion oats. Quick oats aren’t going to be as noticeable in the bread, whereas, the old fashioned oats will give the bread a heartier texture. Both options are good – just different.
- We like a 5% fat or more Greek Yogurt to boost the moistness of the bread.
- Don’t over-mix your bread, or it’ll end up too dense.
- If you want to be really picky, you could measure your bananas. You want about 1 1/2 cups, but we typically just mash up 3 and go with it.
- If you like a crunchy exterior, top with a little butter and brown sugar during the last 5 minutes the bread cooks. YUM!
