When John Armstrong was 10 years old and growing up in Nashville, his father tried to create a new sales territory three hours away in Knoxville. Every Friday evening, John and his parents would pile into the family car and hit the road. Saturday nights would find the family driving back home to make it to church on Sunday. These were the days of AM radio which meant that every Friday and Saturday night was a three hour session with The Grand Ole Opry. Sunday mornings, his Dad was the first one ready so he would sit on the couch playing and singing “Unclouded Day,” “Wreck of the Old 97,” and “Gone Home.” During John’s teenage years his parents prayed because they felt that he spent too much time in his room playing the guitar, growing his hair, and listening to Poco, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and James Taylor. Inspired by the melodies and feelings of the music he grew up with, John began to write his own music. This led to signing a contract to publish his first song at age 17. Since then John has spent his time playing in churches, prisons, jails and the writers clubs in Nashville. One of his projects, “Baby Brother Jesus,” has been performed worldwide to enthusiastic response. His original Easter musical, entitled “I Know What Love is Now”, has been performed for over 15 years in Mount Juliet, TN, most recently during Easter 2013. John has released two solo CD projects of original material with Two Fish Records: “Stone” in 1998 and “Concrete and Steel” in 2010. That same year, John hit the stage with the John Armstrong Band. Composed of seasoned Nashville players and singers, they have been performing their original brand of country and classic rock at local venues such as Douglas Corner and the Listening Room. In 2013, the band released its debut album "Not Home Yet" available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, and other digital outlets. Source: Submitted [less-]

Anyone who hears Kyndon Oakes sing country music knows that this is where his heart lies. Some fans liken his style to McGraw in the soulful country vocals, others to Keith Urban as a songwriting influence for the natural guitar-based drive of his songs, but in point of fact Kyndon Oakes is very much his own musical man. His natural business sense kicked in as he began playing clubs in Colorado and building a local following. But his dreams by then were focused firmly on Music Row. Oakes relocated to Nashville three years ago, and to say he has hit the ground running would be an understatement. As with everything else in his life and career, Kyndon Oakes loves making a lot of exciting stuff happen in a short period of time. Now that he’s in Nashville, he’s at last found the perfect opportunity to grow his music and his writing. And once country radio gets hold of songs like “Drive” and “Weather Man,” don’t be surprised to see a couple million country fans become Kyndon Oakes fans at the drop of a hat. Five women – three sisters, a great-granddaughter, a sister-in-law – sort through the attic of their recently departed family matriarch, in search of inspiration for her memorial service. They unearth trials and tears, love and laughter, and perform the music of iconic artists from Bessie Smith to Beyoncé. Sistas traces the relationship of Black women and popular music, with songs including "Oh, Happy Day," "God Bless The Child," "Stormy Weather," "Nowhere To Run," "I Will Survive," "Single Ladies," "I Am Not My Hair," "A Woman's Worth," and many more. The cast includes Sarina-Joi Crowe as Tamika; Lisa Graham as Gloria; Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva as Roberta; Aleta Myles as Simone; and Brittany Nelson as Heather.  The playwright is Nashville's own Dorothy Marcic, author of the internationally successful musical Respect, which is a chronicle of women's rights as expressed in popular song.  She's based nowadays in New York, but some of the early workshops and readings of Sistas: The Musical happened here in Music City. Since then, the show has run off-Broadway for some 5 years. Dorothy will join us for the performance and a post-performance discussion on Thursday, February 23. Sistas: The Musical is sponsored by HCA/TriStar Health. [less-]

PROGRAM Buxtehude (orch. Chavez) – Chaconne in E minor
Terry Riley – At the Royal Majestic  Live Recording
Stravinsky – The Rite of Spring
Be there as your Nashville Symphony performs Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring for the first time ever at Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
  • One of the most challenging and revolutionary pieces in the classical repertoire, Rite still sounds as edgy and exciting as it did when it caused a riot in Paris 100 years ago.
  • The opening of Rite features the most famous bassoon solo in the repertoire, performed here by the Nashville Symphony’s new principal bassoonist
  • The celebrated “Father of Minimalism,” Terry Riley is a hugely influential composer whose groundbreaking work changed the course of both classical and popular music.
  • Riley's At the Royal Majestic will feature organist Cameron Carpenter, who is a true iconoclast, a riveting performer and one of America's great organ virtuosos.
  • Buxtehude was a contemporary of Bach's. Though well-known for his organ pieces, Chaconne is orchestrated for a full ensemble.

Fronted by 16-year-old songwriter Rhyan Sinclair, All the Little Pieces (with Billy P. Thomas on bass and Perry Ritter on guitar) calls their sound Southern Grunge.
