2018 Ingram New Works Festival

Nashville’s annual celebration of playmaking invites local audiences to hear fresh work by emerging voices. Make new friends by connecting with new plays.

The Ingram New Works Festival is Nashville’s annual celebration of playmaking, taking place May 9-19 at Nashville State Community College. The festival invites local audiences to hear fresh new work by exciting new voices and make new friends by connecting with new plays.

The 2018 plays cover a wide variety of topics, each with their own unique inspiration. Cristina Florencia Castro’s play The Very Last Wishes of Grandpa Joe, or Mia & Hector Go Sightseeing features an acclaimed pop-up book artist traveling to Ireland with her best friend while silently grappling with her loss of vision. In Nate Eppler’s This Red Planet, a former US President from Texas wakes up one morning and decides to be an artist instead of a Republican, enrolling in private painting lessons from an art teacher hired specifically to discourage him. Ingram alumna Tori Keenan-Zelt’s new play How the Baby Died tells the story of a young actress who moves across the country to be a live-in nanny for her gay friends while making an unsettling audition tape for a French horror theatre company. James Anthony Tyler’s Pranayama rounds out the bunch, focusing on a set of neighbors struggling to connect in a Bikram yoga studio in a gentrifying corner of Harlem during the 2016 presidential election.

All of the plays have been developed for several months with local actors, directors, and dramaturgs as part of the Ingram New Works Lab, just one of the facets of Nashville Rep’s Ingram New Works Project. The initiative was created with the support of co-founder Martha R. Ingram to provide an opportunity for theatre artists to develop new theatre works while in residency at Nashville Rep.
