A Legacy of Uplift

he Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program was established in January of 1997 at Belmont University as a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. events are held each January as part of the observance of Dr. King’s birthday. Each of these events are open to the Belmont community and to the public and all are welcome and invited to attend. Events each year include a candlelight vigil in commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement, a chapel service, and a campus dialogue on diversity, race and ethnicity.

Monday, January 17

Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Address – An Exercise in Hope
10am-10:50am Gabhart Chapel
Dr. Esau McCaulley’s recent book, “Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope” has won numerous awards including Christianity Today’s book of the year. Rev. McCaulley is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and teaches New Testament at Wheaton College. Sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Committee.

Friday, January 21

Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Sermon – Infinite Hope
10am-10:50am Gabhart Chapel
Bishop Anne Henning Byfield is president of the African Methodist Episcopal Council of Bishops, in addition to shepherding the AME churches in TN and KY. She has established a vocational school in Haiti, re-established the AME Church in Cuba, was instrumental in planting ten churches, and is the author of several books. Sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Committee.
