9th Annual State of the Word
This event will feature the region’s top college and high school writers, poets, emcees, and spoken word artists who have emerged from Southern Word’s programs.
Words have the power to create change, which is why Southern Word and its partners will host the ninth annual State of the Word. The event will feature the region’s top college and high school writers, poets, emcees, and spoken word artists who have emerged from Southern Word’s programs. T Participating writers have received standing ovations at TEDxNashville, MNPS School Board, Leadership Nashville, and Child Advocacy Day.
This important night provides a platform for students to create community change by addressing the issues that resonate deepest with them and know that they have been heard by their community. Moved by the courage and truth these youth speak, you will walk away from this event inspired and forever changed.
A panel of judges will also honor one youth with the title of the third Nashville Youth Poet Laureate. This program aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, diversity and tolerance, and youth voice across Nashville.
All event proceeds go to benefit Southern Word, a non-profit youth development and education organization, and the placement of writing mentors in Middle Tennessee’s public schools.
This event and the Nashville Youth Poet Laureate program would not be possible without the following supporters: Austin Peay State University, Blair School of Music, Commons at Vanderbilt, Dan and Margaret Maddox Charitable Foundation, Humanities Tennessee, LEAD Public Schools, Memorial Foundation, Metro Nashville Arts Commission, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Middle Tennessee State University, Nashville Public Library, Nashville Public Library Foundation, Nashville State Community College, National Endowment for the Arts, Office of the Mayor, Tennessee Arts Commission, Tennessee State University, Urban Word, Vandy Spoken Word, and Vanderbilt Writing Studio.
