Fresh from his stint as emcee for the 17th Annual Get Behind the Mule Tom Waits Tribute & Benefit (featured on WKRN News Channel 2), Southern neo-beatnik Afton Wolfe has announced a free show at The Underdog to celebrate the release of Twenty-Three, the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed debut LP, Kings for Sale, (Grandiflora Records) which drew acclaim from The East Nashvillian for Wolfe’s “growly but sonorous voice…like if Tom Waits and Randy Newman were in your kitchen.”
The new EP’s title is more than an allusion to its calendar date and the year of the nascent millennium. The number 23 has a revered history steeped in mystical properties. Wolfe explains, “The number 23 is Magic, and as such, it has been significant in my musical journey, so my delusional apophenia led me to release these 5 (2+3) songs together on 2.3.23 for the purpose of conjuring all the Magic I possibly could from this Music.”
The new EP features Regina McCrary (vocals), Melanie Dewey (vocals), Madison George (percussion), Zachery Gregory (trumpet), Mike Miz (guitar), Chad Stuible (keys), Daniel Seymour (bass, autoharp), Seth Fox (saxophone, flute), Rebecca Weiner Tompkins (violin), Asa Lane (percussions), Brett Ryan Stewart (bass, production), Hayden Cotcher (drums), Robin Wolfe (vocals), and Justin Amaral (drums).
Joining Mr. Wolfe on this cosmic evening are friends/special guests Jon Latham, Mike Miz, Dillon Warnek, Daniel Seymour, Conrad y Skordalia, Seth Fox, Mary Hull and Chad Stuible.
