ALABAMA STORY by Kenneth Jones
RATED PG
Truth is stranger than fiction when a book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit is put on the shelves of the Alabama State Library in 1959. This gentle children’s book with an apparent hidden message stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian in Montgomery, Alabama, just as the civil rights movement is flowering. A contrasting story of childhood friends — an African American man and a woman of white privilege, reunited in adulthood in Montgomery that same year — provides private counterpoint to the public events of the play. As compared to the spirit of the classic To Kill A Mockingbird, this thought-provoking drama spiked with humor, heartbreak and hope has been hailed as one of the best new Southern plays in ten or twenty years!
