Andrew Jackson’s 256th Birthday
Make plans to join the Hermitage for a celebration of President Andrew Jackson’s 256th birthday with half-price Grounds Passes for the day! The celebration will include children’s activities, gallery talks, the annual presidential wreath-laying ceremony with the Tennessee National Guard at the President’s Tomb and a keynote address from John Cooper, Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County—and more!
Andrew Jackson received many gifts throughout his lifetime. A large cache of these “valuable tokens,” as he remarked in an 1831 thank you letter, are part of The Hermitage Collection. Visitors are greeted by a bust of Levi Woodbury as they enter the Mansion’s Center Hall. Woodbury, Jackson’s Secretary of the Treasury, gave this sculpture to Jackson. An 1835 commemorative walking cane made of wood from Commadore Oliver Perry’s flagship USS Lawrence, which assisted in the British defeat during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, has a commanding position in the Andrew Jackson Center exhibit Born for A Storm.
Join Vice President of Collections Pam Miner to learn about unique gifts received by Jackson. Several of these objects will be set out to view.
