Art + Soul is a themed event featuring audience participation, spoken word and open mic. A whole lot of fun for creative types. The Juneteenth Edition is an evening of thoughtful lyrical reflection and celebration.
Juneteenth as an observance is primarily in local celebrations. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional songs such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing“, and reading of works by noted African-American writers such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou. The Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles, of Coahuila, Mexico also celebrate Juneteenth.
For local poets and lovers of the spoken word Art + Soul is an expressive celebration where all are invited to tell a story, create a story, poem or recite something that you personally enjoy and draw inspiration from. It’s an evening like none other.
