Arts and Healing: A Response to Ephraim Urevbu's Naked Truth

Joyfully returning 6 years after their debut appearance at Leu Foyer Gallery, Poverty and the Arts (POVA) is proud to present this group show in response to the work of artist Ephraim Urevbu who is currently exhibiting in the Leu Art Gallery.

Featured artists are A.M. HASSAN, Daniel Holmes, Edwin Lockridge, Kateri, Sam Fulks, and Thaddaeus Tekell.

With similar experiences facing and overcoming adversity, POVA represents a diverse collective of artists all of whom have been impacted by homelessness at some point in their lives. POVA and its Artist Collective aim to “bridge gaps through meaningful dialogue” with the primary conduits being art and creativity. With some pieces responding directly to Urevbu’s reflections on injustice, others have been inspired by his use of art to process, heal, prepare, and move forward. Through their shared themes and content, the artists represented here share Urevbu’s sentiment of appreciating art as a bridge from past to present, through the challenges of poverty, cultural and familial barriers, and neurodiversity.

The exhibition runs August 23 through November 05, 2021. There will be a reception on Thursday, September 30, 4pm-6pm, at Belmont University’s Leu Foyer Gallery (located in the Lila D. Bunch Library). Exhibiting POVA artists will be present to reflect on their artwork and the experiences that inspired them.
