Astri Snodgrass

Astri Snodgrass will bring her paper-rubbing drawings to Channel To Channel during the months of March and April in “A Pearl, A Fossil, or a Scar”

As you view these images on a screen, they seem to give the impression that there is three-dimensionality to this work. However, these rubbings are not objects. Rather, they are graphite images that have been “folded” over and over by Snodgrass’ rubbing technique on a single sheet of flat paper.

Snodgrass explains, “In Spanish, doblar means both to fold and to double. It is this idea of multiplication that fascinates me. This body of work deals with the relationship between materiality and image – the latter is formed by the former. Yet the image itself so often multiplies outward, divorced from its material cause, in our screen-dominated world.”

Astri Snodgrass lives and works in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Alabama and a BA in Art and Spanish from Luther College. Experiences in Norway at Nansenskolen Norsk Humanistisk Akademi and the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina helped shape her interests in language, light, and perception. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows at COOP Gallery and mild climate in Nashville, Tennessee, the Fuel and Lumber Company in Birmingham Alabama, the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and McNeese State University’s Grand Gallery in Lake Charles, Louisiana to name a few. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Studios Midwest and Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences. Snodgrass currently teaches painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
