In celebraiton of Belmont Unviersity’s 125th Anniversary the historic bells will ring out across campus. Carilloneur and Belmont music historian Dr. Richard Shadinger has created this program, Bells at Belmont, A Retrospective, to spotlight the history of the carillon since the 1929 dedicaton recital.
Belmont’s 43-bell carillon is one of fewer than 200 in the United States. Belmont’s historic tower, built around 1853, is the oldest tower in the United States containing a carillon. Ward Belmont’s carillon of 23 bells in 1929 was one of the first carillons ever built in the South. The present carillon was built in 1986, with 19 new bells added in 2002 and a final forty-third bell added in 2006.
