Commemorating Black History Month

Join Discovery Center for special programs and activities commemorating African American pioneers of science and invention as you explore rockets, compressed air, carbon filaments, lightbulbs and heart surgery! They’ll be celebrating the contributions to scientific progress by Lonnie Johnson, Lewis Latimer, Daniel Hale Williams and Mae Jemison.

  • February 4-7: Compressed Air – Lonnie Johnson, inventor of the Super Soaker
  • February 11-13: Carbon Filaments & Lightbulbs – Lewis Latimer, inventor and patent draftsman for the lightbulb and telephone
  • February 14: Heart Dissection – Daniel Hale Williams, heart surgeon
  • February 25-28: Rockets – Mae Jemison, first African American woman in space
