Darwin Day Party, Talk and Discussion about Evolution

Presented by Americans United for Separation of Church and State-Nashville Chapter at Metro Nashville West Police Precinct, Nashville TN

Feb 12 2017
Darwin Day Party, Talk and Discussion about Evolution

The Sunday Assembly will join Americans United for refreshments and conversation followed by a talk on Charles Darwin and evolution. Darwin’s 208th birthday is being celebrated around the world by scientific societies and religious groups. Free.

Rev. David Kidd will speak to a joint meeting of Nashville Chapter Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Nashville Sunday Assembly on Darwin Day.

David will lead off with his experiences teaching anthropology before he became a minister.  (He served 37 years at Hillsboro Presbyterian Church.)  He will explain the importance of evolution and what happens when a youth is brought up taught creationism and then gets into high school or college and encounters science.  He may shock you when he says that one-third of Americans reject evolution entirely. We will also learn more about Charles Darwin and the uproar when his work was first made public in 1859.

After the introductory talk by David Kidd, there will be a time for questions for him or about church-state issues, some of which will be fielded by people from Americans United.  Diana Page and Charles Sumner will discuss briefly current legislative issues.

The Sunday Assembly is part of a worldwide network of Assemblies which seek community and a secular life.  They will have their monthly assembly at 10 am the same day at Scarritt-Bennett followed by lunch nearby.

Nashville Chapter Americans United has been defending your religious liberty since 2001 – and its parent organization is celebrating 70 years.

Charles Darwin’s birthday and Evolution Weekend are celebrated around the world by hundreds of churches and synagogues as well as by scientific societies.  Evolution Weekend is an opportunity for serious discussion and reflection on the relationship between religion and science.
