Destination Known: Wines of Sicily
Join at Gray & Dudley for our July wine dinner! We haven’t been able to travel safely in the past year, so they wanted to create an experience centered around what we love most about traveling–food and wine–and bring it to you in Nashville.
This month, 21c takes a trip to a magical island off the coast of Italy – Sicily.
Sicilians have been making wine since 4000 BC. According to legend, Dionysus brought wine to Sicily (and pleasure to mankind).
Its dry, warm climate features regular sunshine and moderate rainfall that suits wine production. Arid conditions reduce the chance of rot and mildew, making Sicily a prime candidate for organic farming. Sicilian wines were once known for making mass-produced “jug” wines by blending its native grapes with those from other regions in Italy. Today, a handful of younger producers have assumed ownership of their family’s aging land, shaking off the shackles of chasing meager profits to producing more honest wine focusing on indigenous grapes that, despite producing lower yields, thrive in Sicily’s climate and fertile soil.
Chef Matt Bell and Wine Director Matias Yerrick present a four course dinner to accompany a line-up of wines that will showcase the new guard of Sicilian winemakers, telling us why we should all be paying more attention to the big island below the boot.
