The Fight for Equality | A Transgender Perspective

Dr. Marisa Richmond, who founded the Tennessee Vals as support for transgender persons, will tell of her experiences in attempting to cope with prejudice and ignorance. Dr. Richmond currently teaches history and women’s and gender studies at MTSU.

Dr. Marisa Richmond will discuss the difficulties encountered as a transgender person in an attempt to be treated equally.  She founded a support group which helps such people and a political action coalition to lobby for legislation.  Dr. Richmond has broken many barriers erected against African Americans and transgender. She is recipient of numerous human rights, LGBT, Black Pride, community service and Trans awards.  She was Woman of the Year for UNITE and a nominee for the ATHENA award.  She is active in Democratic politics and was President of the Davidson County Democratic Women.  Recently she was official Podium Timekeeper at the Democratic National Convention.  She is on the Metro Human Relations Commission.
