From The Archives with Paula James Chavis

As the Nashville Jazz Workshop (NJW) has had to close its doors for live performances, it continues to provide the community with jazz instruction and performances through online offerings. Each Wednesday evening the NJW offers a YouTube stream of a live home concert (Jazz From Home) or a recording of a past concert performed live in the Jazz Cave (From The Archives).

August 2020 is the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage in the United States, achieved in 1920 through the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In commemoration, the NJW is devoting its August streaming offerings to the work of women artists. All Wednesday streams take place at 7pm CDT on the NJW’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/nashvillejazz.

Tonight features music with Paula James Chavis.

A swinging set from the March 2019 performance featuring this popular Nashville vocalist with the John Birdsong Trio (John Birdsong, bass, Bryan Harrison, piano, and Wendell Henry, drums) with special guest, guitarist Geary Moore.

Paula is a gifted and elegant vocalist who has performed around town for many years, often with longtime collaborators John Birdsong or Sam Levine. At home in jazz and popular styles, her influences include Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan. Here she leads the band through a swinging evening of jazz standards, including what has become her signature tune, a gorgeous rendition of Nancy Wilson’s “Guess Who I Saw Today.”
