George Dickel Distillery Tour
Following advice and guidance from local health and State authorities, Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. has reopened with limited capacity. While they are unfortunately unable to offer distillery tours at this time, the visitor center is open for shopping and tastings Friday and Saturday: 9:30am-4pm, and Sunday 11:30am-4pm (Bottle Sales begin at 12pm on Sunday).
Born 40 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was an established Nashville merchant when he entered the whisky business. Dickel grew his reputation for selling the smoothest, most mellow spirits in the region.
Thus, Geo. A. Dickel & Co. was born and when the Cascade Hollow Distillery opened in 1878 in neighboring Coffee County, George Dickel bought a large share. George Dickel followed in the Scottish tradition of spelling whisky without an “e.”
George Dickel preferred whisky made in the winter months more than summer months because he felt it made the whisky taste smoother, so the company began advertising their Geo. A. Dickel’s Cascade Tennessee Whisky as “Mellow as Moonlight.” This is why their whisky is chilled before undergoing the charcoal-mellow filtration known as the Lincoln County Process. This extra step smooths out the flavor and they’re still the only Tennessee distillery to do it.
For protection and safety, all guests touring the George Dickel Distillery are required to wear proper footwear. Open-toed shoes are strongly discouraged as well as spiked heels (it’s tough to walk across metal grating floors in heels).
Come tour the distillery and discover George Dickel’s award winning whisky and its time honored traditions. The Visitor’s Center is filled with antiques, photos and special memories, and the George Dickel General Store is a wonderful place to visit and drop a line to family or friends at their very own U.S. Post Office – the only working post office at any distillery in the United States. If you prefer, you can rock on the porch and enjoy the abundant nature that picturesque Cascade Hollow has to offer. NEED DIRECTIONS? CLICK HERE.
