Introducing: Michael Dickins and Dawn Martin Dickins
KT Wolf Gallery is please to introduce Michael Dickins and Dawn Martin Dickins to Nashville in an exhibition of multi-media installations that explore themes and tensions unique to the United States and the south in particular. Their collaborative work, “Raising Two White Boys in the South,” explores the influences of tradition and the past on south- ern identity and the modern compulsion to cling to or reject these stereotypes. Michael Dickens’s “PreOccupied,” speaks to mass media’s affect on awareness and empathy in the American consumer.
In regards to “Raising Two White Boys in the South” the Dickins’ say, “We started this project as a way to understand and discuss topics such as diversity and southern identity with our children. The main question we started with was, “How can we expose our children and educate them about other cultures, races and ethnicities while living and working in such a homogeneous community?” Michael Dickins uses “PreOccupied” to seek answers to how, in this “age of social media and instant information,” many people are unaware of global events as grievous as “economic collapses, toppled govern- ments, mass civilian deaths, and the overwhelming use of force against civilians.”
This is the Dickins’ first exhibit in Nashville, and the artists will be present at the opening reception on April 11 from 6:00pm-10:00pm.
