John E. Mayfield Memorial 5K

The Kiwanis Club of Cheatham County is excited to announce its fifth annual 5K race.

The Kiwanis Club of Cheatham County is excited to announce its fifth annual John E. Mayfield Memorial 5K, set for Saturday, March 24 in Ashland City. The event, formerly known as the Middle Tennessee 5K Shootout, honors the late philanthropist and businessman John E. Mayfield, an Ashland City resident.

Mayfield owned and operated Mayfield Bookstore for 27 years and was a volunteer for numerous boards and organizations, including The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and its affiliate the Cheatham County Community Foundation, American Red Cross, Kiwanis, Imagination Library Board for Cheatham County and the American Legion, just to name a few.

According to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund website, Mayfield joined the Kiwanis Club of Cheatham County in 2007. He served as the charter club president and distinguished lieutenant governor of Division 14 in the Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis International.

Competitive runners from all over the state will gather to compete for prize money for the 5K, to be held on a flat course billed as one of the area’s fastest races. It’s not just for the competitive runner, however. Friendly community competitions will bring out the occasional runner, walkers and families.

Proceeds are to benefit the Cheatham County Imagination Library.

An affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the organization’s mission is to promote and encourage reading by children of Cheatham County. The children are given books once a month from the day of their birth until age 5. The State of Tennessee and the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation match the cost.

The Kiwanis Club of Cheatham County renamed the race to The John E. Mayfield Memorial 5K to celebrate the life of its charter president, John E. Mayfield. John passed away on September 29, 2017. Through his own foundation, which he founded in 1996, John was a local philanthropist who loved serving the community.
