Kudzu Kings are a highly energetic and entertaining musical outfit from Oxford, Mississippi. Their sound is a unique blend of country, bluegrass and improvisational rock & roll that has appealed to many; young, old and in-between.
The band has been performing since late 1994 and gained a strong foothold in the Southeast in their early years, filling several prominent music venues. The late ‘90s and early 2000s saw their reach spread (much like kudzu itself), selling out shows from the Carolinas to Colorado, and ultimately venturing up the Northeast into Canada for a couple of tours. They have shared the stage several times with Widespread Panic (with whom Kudzu guitarist George Mcconnell would eventually become a member), as well as Leftover Salmon, Banyan (Weir/Wasserman), Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Junior Brown, and Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. They have also appeared at numerous festivals (including – but not inclusive of – Beale Street Music Festival, Mighty Mississippi Music Festival, 3 Rivers Music Festival, Crossroads, Riverfest, Jubilee Jam). They were featured on television twice as the featured act on the WWL Morning Program in New Orleans and appeared as special guests on Charlie Chase’s Tennessee Mornings program in Nashville.
Their debut CD was produced by Grammy Award Winner Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Huey Lewis & The News, Steve Miller Band) and their follow up was recorded by his protégé, Jeffrey Reed. Over 10,000 units were sold via independent sales and distribution and the band received considerable airplay domestically and overseas via AAA and college-formatted stations.
To this day, the band still performs with the classic lineup intact and continues to have well attended shows throughout the Southeast. The Kudzus are celebrating their 25th year (2019-2020) by releasing archival (the University of Mississippi Blues Archives is adding nearly 600 shows to their Special Collection) and recording new material with plans to celebrate the milestone with several commemorative concerts.
