Poetry & the African American Experience with Frank X Walker

Celebrate Black History Month with Poetry and the African American Experience, a rich communal experience in which to explore the experiences of African-Americans living in the South. Featuring renowned poet, Frank X Walker.

Celebrate Black History Month with Poetry and the African American Experience, a rich communal experience in which to explore the experiences of African-Americans living in the South. Featured poet, Frank X Walker, who has been voted one of the most creative professors in the South and the originator of the word, Affrilachia, will speak and teach about historical poetry and how it has become the go-to genre for the reclamation of (s)heroes and the rescuing of muted and silenced voices of oppressed peoples.

During this writing workshop, Frank X Walker will lead us through the interrogation process, sharpening and utilization of the important and necessary tools of empathy, memory, research, and imagination that is so prevalent in African American poetry.

There will be a FREE reading by Frank X Walker prior to this event on Friday, February 17 at 7:30 pm at  Global Education Center.

This project is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, with additional support from Tennessee Arts Commission, Metro-Nashville Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts.
