RISE by Nina Covington | Arts & Music at Wedgewood/Houston
Visual Stories Portrayed Through Mixed-Media Photography.
Nina Covington’s Rise explores the artist’s journey through healing and the triumph of will and indomitable spirit. Using her iconic long exposure photography as the base for evocative mixed media pieces, Covington creates an environment for conversations on the trials of life. Rise will be free to view and open to the public at abrasiveMedia during the Arts & Music at Wedgewood Houston art crawl on September 2, 2017 from 6-9 pm. There will be a closing reception with an artist talk on September 30, 2017 from 4-6 pm. The collection contains nudity. Nina will have a book of the collected artwork in the show, also titled Rise, available for purchase.
Nina was most recently featured in solo shows for Machisma at the Corvidae Collective, Movement at Modern East Gallery, Customs House Museum, and a group show at the Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery in LA. Through Machisma, Covington illustrated the dichotomy of women, exposing the beauty that lies not only in the feminine but also in the masculine. For Rise, each piece in this exhibit is presented in mixed media form. She has painted over her canvases with a series of different mediums to enhance color, light, shadow, and texture.
Nina Covington has always known that it was her job to tell stories. While working as a model, she tells those stories in front of the camera. A pivotal moment came when Nina realized she can only tell half of the story as a model; the other half is always told by the photographer. In all of Nina’s work, she gets down to basics. From her fine art equestrian photography to her long exposures, she plays in the shadows.
