No story, and no life, takes place nowhere. Setting in story is often much more than mere backdrop: it informs the characters, and they in turn shape the reader’s understanding of place by their perspectives on it. In short, whether you’re working in prose fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, place matters–and is a powerful vehicle for digging deeper into a work in progress or kickstarting new writing. In this three-hour workshop, we’ll look at some examples of the treatment of place in literature, discuss the ways place informs our writing, and explore how we can use details of setting to strengthen our fiction and nonfiction. The workshop will revolve around in-class exercises, voluntary sharing of work in progress, and group discussion.
