Gantry wrote “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife,” a classic recorded by Country Music Hall of Fame member Glen Campbell. Gantry’s songs also have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Reba McEntire, Roy Clark, k.d. lang, Wayne Newton, Billy Walker, and many more. Gantry was a prominent songwriter during Nashville’s 1960s and ʼ70s, teaming with like-minded Outlaws, including Mickey Newbury, Shel Silverstein, and Kris Kristofferson, to reimagine the very language of country music. “Chris Gantry is the most consistent, dedicated, creative artist that I have ever known in my life,” said Kristofferson, who claims Gantry as an inspiration for his timeless song “The Pilgrim, Chapter 33.” Presented in support of the exhibit Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ʼ70s. Presented by SunTrust. Ford Theater.
