Sparkle + Glow

Kelly Brumfield-Woods’ hard-edge abstract paintings explore visual perception, color theory, and pattern. Although formal aspects of the Light and Space movement are present, she eschews minimalism with the addition of glitter and soft textiles. Viewers themselves activate the works, seeing shifts in color, tone, and light, as they move across and in front of the pieces. The colors are sometimes chosen to induce an afterimage, a hallucinatory effect causing the viewer to perceive a temporary glow in their vision upon looking away from a given piece.

Andy Harding is a sculptor living and working in Nashville. A range of interests from Eastern philosophy to contemporary science inspire and influence his work, but the practical origins lie in an appreciation of the material at hand. Harding’s work, which often utilizes discarded materials, occurs in an evolutionary manner, relying on his intuitive creative process rather than working towards some preconceived end.

Harding’s portion of this show includes three-dimensional pieces displayed in a variety of ways, including mounted on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, and displayed on the ground. The pieces, through their use of light, angles, and materials, feel as if they extend beyond their physical borders and converse with their surroundings in a synergistic manner.

Harding’s use of light and angles and Brumfield-Woods’ use of shimmering glitter and bright colors combine to create a dazzling exhibit that radiates throughout the gallery. Modfellows is pleased to invite you to this dynamic springtime exhibition.
