Spoon Carving Workshop for Beginners
Learn from local artisan Bill Maddox to carve you own wooden spoons.
On April 24, 2021, Historic Travellers Rest is excited to present a hands-on spoon carving workshop led by local artisan Bill Maddox. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Historic Travellers Rest. This class will help you develop basic skills in learning how to carve spoons. This age-old craft has many uses and is a great way to relax and can even make great gifts.
The cost is $65 per person and includes all tools and materials needed to learn to carve your own custom wooden spoon to take home with you at the end of the workshop. Participants will need to bring their own lunch, so they don’t miss instruction time leaving to purchase food. Once the instructor has gone over all safety protocols and basics of carving, the remainder of the day will be spent with one-on-one instruction and assistance from Bill in carving your one-of-a-kind utensil.
In this workshop, you will learn the basics of carving a spoon. You will be supplied a spoon carving kit for beginners, spoon blanks, and be able to take home a completed spoon or two along with your tool kit. The spoon carving kit includes a hook knife, a sloyd knife, a detail knife, a leather strop, polishing compound, and canvas tool roll, all of which are yours to take home and continue perfecting your newly learned skill.
To attend and benefit from this unique workshop, you will need to possess very good hand skills of strength and dexterity. All attendees must be 18 or older and sign a release waiver prior to starting the session.
Weather permitting, this workshop will be held outdoors. This is a rain or shine event and will be held indoors if needed.
