"States of Clay" Ceramic Art Exhibition
A group exhibition, featuring ceramic artwork by 18 artists from around the country using a variety of techniques and processes to explore a wide range of ideas, concepts and forms
On July 23rd, Elephant Gallery will host a group exhibition of ceramic works by a wide range of artists. “States of Clay” brings together sculptural, functional and experimental ceramic works by eighteen artists hailing from around the country. The work included in the show runs the gamut from monumental vessels by James Watkins (recently retired distinguished Horn Professor from Texas Tech) to curious and disturbing figurative works by Tom Bartel (head of the ceramics program at the University of Ohio) to intimate essays in generative processes and material qualities by Virginia Griswold (Austin Peay State University professor).
Many of the featured artists have a background in teaching, while others are currently pursuing degrees (like Gary White, who is beginning the final year of his MFA at UT Knoxville) or are working diligently on successful creative careers (like Rebecca Blevins, whose ceramics production studio is located in the Elephant Gallery building). Diversity abounds in this group and their varied approaches to making, however one unifying truth is nearly all of these artists will be teaching in some capacity at Buchanan Arts, the new nonprofit art education studio located at 1409 Buchanan Street (next to Elephant Gallery). The work in “States of Clay” introduces a new group of artists to the Nashville community and allows the inaugural group of Buchanan Arts students to meet future teachers.
The opening reception for “States of Clay” will be held from 6-9pm on July 23rd, with the exhibition running through September 24th. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
On Saturday, July 24th, Buchanan Arts will hold an open house from 11am – 3pm at 1409 Buchanan Street, inviting everyone to see the newly established space and learn more about the programming to come.
