The Hermitage story is not just the story of Andrew Jackson and his family. In fact, the Jackson family story cannot be told without the stories of the 150 enslaved Africans who lived and worked at The Hermitage. Through scant documents, archaeology and oral tradition, an image of The Hermitage slave community has emerged. This temporary exhibit highlights stories of just a handful of the Hermitage enslaved, reflecting the struggle and contributions of individuals and families who supported The Hermitage and the Jackson family.
