Storytelling in Ceramics: Techniques for Sculpture Construction

The course focuses on the traditional craft medium of ceramics as a storytelling vehicle.

Storytelling in Ceramics: Techniques for Sculpture Construction

Explore how the traditional craft medium of ceramics can be a powerful vehicle to tell stories about our world. Students will learn how to create sculptures using slab construction and other hand-building techniques. We will also study how ceramics has been utilized to document the world since ancient times. Students are encouraged to pursue their own creative goals with individualized support from the instructor, in addition to learning through a variety of formal demonstrations. This course will deepen understanding of form, decoration, and the material science that makes ceramic art so incredible!

Pieces will be kiln-fired and glazed, painted, or stained. Clay and glazes are included, but students should bring their own set of clay tools. A suggested list will be provided before the first day of class.
