Summer Activities at the Tennessee State Museum

Visit the Tennessee State Museum this summer for a variety of FREE activities happening Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Join the Museum this summer for a variety of activities happening Tuesdays through Saturdays. In the event of a special program, the special program’s schedule will take precedent. Please see the Calendar of Events for additional information.

Painting the Smokies Gallery Tours
Tuesday through Saturday
11AM – noon
Join one of the museum’s guides for stories on the art and artifacts featured in the Museum’s newest exhibition, Painting the Smokies: Art, Community, and the Making of a National Park.

Hands-On History
Tuesday through Saturday
11AM – noon
Museum historic interpreters will present a program throughout the galleries, such as what Civil War soldiers carried in their haversacks, life on the early Tennessee frontier, and how Tennessee women helped American women gain the right to vote. Presentations and gallery location will vary daily.

Highlight Tours
Tuesday through Saturday
The Museum Highlight Tours are a great way to hear some of the great stories behind the museum’s artifacts. Join one of the guides as they unlock stories from throughout Tennessee history, starting with prehistory all the way to the modern day. Meet on the second level lobby area near the stairs; no reservation is required.

Historic Games
Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday
2PM – 3PM
Learn more about the games which were played in the past such as Hoop and Stick, Nine Pins, Checkers, Chuck a Luck, and Chunkey. Museum educators will be on hand to teach you how to play. Kids of all ages are sure to enjoy these fun games.

Frontier Print Shop
Wednesday & Friday
2PM – 3:30PM
Join the museum in the Forging a Nation Gallery for an in-depth look at the Frontier Print Shop and the 18th century letterpress printing process.

Free parking is available in the parking lot which is located between the Museum and the Nashville Farmers’ Market. There is also free two-hour parking available along 6th and 7th Avenues. Because there are a limited number of these spots used by both Museum and Farmers' Market visitors, it is highly recommended that on the weekends, visitors seek alternate modes of transportation to visit the Museum. State of Tennessee parking lots are available Monday through Friday, after 5:30pm, or on weekends unless otherwise stated or reserved. Terms and conditions of use may vary according to the requested lot.
