The Naked Truth: An American Story in White, Red and Blue

Nigerian-born, Memphis-based artist Ephraim Urevbu uses his powerful paintings to explore a fractured society, confront personal fears and biases, and spark community dialogue around America’s deep-rooted issues with racism.

Meeting the realities of life as one of eight children to a single mom in his native home of Nigeria, Ephraim Urevbu dedicated himself early on to education as the key to success. He attended one of only three elite high schools in his hometown of Warri, and then went on to attend Africa’s oldest art college in Lagos, Nigeria. Refusing the expectation of an acceptable professional pathway, Urevbu put an ocean between himself and his family to follow his truth – a passion for art in America and the city of Memphis.

In The Naked Truth, Urevbu uses his powerful paintings to explore a fractured society, confront personal fears and biases, and spark community dialogue around America’s deep-rooted issues with racism. “Several paintings are layered over the image of the American flag with the aim of peeling off those layers to unveil the “Naked Truth” (those white washed / untold stories) and urge visual immersion or physical reaction, by asking the viewer to explore the simple message beneath.” says Urevbu.

The Watkins College of Art at Belmont University is honored to exhibit Ephraim Urevbu’s inspirational project in the Leu Art Gallery. Created out of personal experience with inequality and social injustice, this important work comes at a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. The exhibition, along with related artist-led programming, allows Belmont University the opportunity to engage in meaningful and productive conversations with their campus and local communities. The exhibit will remain on view through December 10, 2021.
