The Outsiders is a cult classic based on S.E.Hinton’s timeless coming of age novel she wrote when she was fifteen. The last generation grew up going to see the star studded movie in theaters, featuring the likes of Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe. Every generation since has connected with these incredibly insightful characters. I think we all see little bits and pieces in both the Socs and the Greasers. We all have struggles in our lives- we are all human. Those struggles and sunsets connect Soc and Grease, you and me, the cast and the audience…. This show, really, is a slice of life. It is raw, and real, and messy, and gritty. In a theatrical setting, it is humanity watching humanity.
The Outsiders has been my favorite book (and movie) since I first experienced its sentimental nature and apparent conflict. My vision for the show encompasses beauty from brokenness. Out of a class torn world, with all its problems and struggles, we see the value and importance of friendships and sunsets, and out of deep sorrow and loss, we see connections and hope.
