Please note, this event has expired.
Join us for the Nashville premiere of The Third Root/La Terceraraiz: Searching the Origins of Son Jarocho documentary, a journey through Mexico, Spain and North Africa, to discover the roots of Son Jarocho music.
Join Global Education Center as we travel the World to discover the roots of Son Jarocho, the traditional music of Veracruz, Mexico and the many Afro Mexicanos who live there.
This journey begins with the story of Afro Mexicano guitarist, Camilo Nu, who was propelled on a personal and musical journey to learn more about his heritage and the roots of Son Jarocho music that played such an important part of his upbringing. Traveling through Mexico, Spain and North Africa, Nu soon discovered the similarities that exist between the traditional Mexican music of Son Jarocho, the music of Southern Europe and the Arab and African worlds. From the Moroccan Andalusian music, Sufi, Berber and the Sub-Saharan gnawa music, Camilo, and the audience, finds a new understanding of the African heritage in Mexico.
This is a three part event that will include: the viewing of the documentary, The Third Root/La Terceraraiz: Searching the Origins of Son Jarocho followed by a Community Gathering & Conversation with director, Reed Rickert, and musician, Camilo Nu and ending with a performance from Camilo Nu.
This performance is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with Tennessee Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, Metro Nashville Arts Commission and Vanderbilt University Center for Latin American Studies.
