Under the Rainbow | Beth Edwards

Beth Edwards. Garden VI, 2021, 42" X 66". Oil on canvas.

Beth Edwards exhibits paintings of small sections of the natural world represented at a magnified scale.

Under the Rainbow is a solo exhibition of paintings created by Memphis-based artist Beth Edwards. The paintings are comprised of small sections of the natural world represented at a magnified scale. Each piece is a record of a steady, meditative painting process – hopefully imbuing the traditional subject of flowers with what the art historian, Norman Bryson termed a “meticulous particularity.” Edwards seeks to make something that is fairly commonplace, a flower blossom, resonate and endure. Due to the life cycle metaphorically embedded in the representation of flowers, they are vanitas images symbolizing the fleetingness of life. However, due to their exuberant color and emphasis on the beauty of nature, they are also meant to communicate joy. This work provides a connection to and awareness of the natural world’s vitality and vulnerability.

Visually, the paintings can be perceived in a similar way as to a medieval manuscript or tapestry. The flowers and foliage are constructed out of a myriad of shapes, intricately patterned and interwoven. Edwards works to make all the elements contribute equally, even if they are playing a peripheral role in the composition, including the more abstracted background shapes and spaces. Although as images they vary in their verisimilitude, each aspect of the flowers, foliage and negative space is invested with the same degree of involvement. The way in which they are paintings first, and believable images second is critical to her artistic concerns.

Beth Edwards received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and an MFA from Indiana University. Edwards has had an active 30-year career painting, exhibiting and teaching. She taught painting at the University of Memphis for 21 years and is the recipient of many awards, grants, commissions, and residencies. Recent awards and honors include the Distinguished Research Award from The University of Memphis; Arts Accelerator Grant, ArtsMemphis; Alumni Association Distinguished Achievement in the Creative Arts Award, University of Memphis; Emmett O’Ryan Award for Artistic Inspiration from ArtsMemphis; Willow Park Mural, UrbanArt Commission for the City of Memphis; and awarded artist for Memphis in May honoring Sweden in 2013. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in galleries, museums, institutions and organizations across the United States, including the Huntsville Museum of Art, Huntsville, AL; the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis; the Contemporary Art Workshop, Chicago; Union University; Arkansas Art Center; Delta State University; and the San Francisco International Fine Arts Exposition. She is represented by the David Lusk Gallery.

Under the Rainbow will remain on display in the Leu Art Gallery located in the Lila D. Bunch Library at Belmont University from July 11 – August 05, 2022. The exhibit is co-sponsored by Watkins College of Art at Belmont University and the Tennessee Arts Academy with additional funding made possible by a generous gift from the Tennessee Arts Academy Foundation.
