Visible Spirit | James Rose

Visible Spirit is a solo show featuring works of drawing and printmaking by James Rose that explore race, fear, isolation, sexuality, struggle, and spirituality through self-portraiture.

The Watkins College of Art at Belmont University is hosting an exhibition in Gallery 121 of works by James Rose. Rose is a printmaker and Professor of Art at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

About his work, he states,

My images are generally figurative, simple (single figure), often self-portraits I use to try and show the complexity of what’s on my mind. I mostly tend to use drawing and printmaking to create images that almost always deal with issues surrounding fear, race, isolation, sexuality, spirituality, struggle, and/ or change.

My practice, in general, starts with drawing both from life and photographic references (depending on my body position and how specific I want to be with lighting). I also tend to draw from smaller studies as a reference for making larger works.

As a printmaker who mostly makes drawings, I see the influence of my love of making prints in the way I approach my drawing practice. I tend to work in series or multiples and often the drawings are very similar to one another loosely mimicking an edition of prints.

I think my work is mostly about being/ feeling off balance. The work in this exhibition maintains a degree of formal balance through grids and symmetry but allude to a struggle to finding emotional balance as I navigate the world. Being seen and not seen usually for all the wrong reasons.
